I am Gospel singer.  I thought I was having post nasal drip, but learned that I have reflux; my symptom - while singing the acid jumps onto my vocals and in the middle of singing I get choked; I have to stop singing until this subsides and I regain my ability to sing only to go through this over and over until I end my song.  I am on Prilosec other than this symptom, I occasionally cough.  Can anybody help.....what can I do to rid myself of this symptom and ultimately reduce the acids totally.

Dear Reeno, welcome to the forum. I hope we'll be able to help you find your answers and make you feel comfortable.
My reflux was atypical and it affected my breathing, my voice and my sinuses as well. I ultimately went to National Jewish in Denver where they diagnosed vocal chord dysfunction secondary to severe GERD. There are exercises that you can do to help alleviate that and I would google that to find them.
Saying this, however, I never had acid come up as you've described, and I would find the best GI you can to run tests to determine how severe your reflux is. If your reflux is coming up like that, I would hazard to guess that you are also aspirating while you sleep, are you finding that you are having breathing problems as well?
Until you know the extent of the problem it is difficult to help you with symptom control. I would start, however, with an excellent resource that Kitt has posted on the top portion of the topics under GERD-Heartburn; there are many self-help items that you can do to help alleviate some of the problems, but you really should get to a good Dr. and soon!

Above is the link to Kitt's resource titled GERD-do I have it? Read through this, I think it may help!
Good luck!

I can't talk for long without choking on reflux. I'm chosing to have the EsophyX procedure in December. My doctor says I'm a borderline canidate for surgery and it's my choice to have it.
I used to sing in church, too. I can't hold a note now without squeaking or choking.

Reeno-
Your issues are very familiar. I play Bluegrass and had to stop singing until I finally had my Nissen 3 years ago. Unfortunately I have some permanent damage and have lost a lot of my range. I manage by changing the chords to suite my voice now instead of adjusting to the songs original chords.
As Janice said, get to a good GI nd find out what exactly is going on and find the best treatment for you.

Take care,
Bill
