Hi friends! I came home early today, just am feeling very tired. I have my appointment tomorrow at noon with the psychologist, I'm hoping for good things, after that I have to have a bone density and chest x-ray.

Tom is at a golf tournament for a few days with some of my cousins and I've got the house to myself. Yesterday I found that I have a visitor in the house, and it's leaving little treasures...yuchh! So today, on the way home from work, I stopped in town and picked up 2 mouse traps...I sure hope I get it. If it's outside I don't touch it, it's their home, but once it comes inside....I take no prisoners.

I learned something from one of Bills posts, bile induced diarrhea; ever since my nissen and gallbladder removal, well you can guess. It has gotten much worse over the last few months and I've suspected gallbladder related, but now that I've got a name, I've been able to do some research and yep, fits me to a T. When I talked to my GI, about the stuff last winter and spring, he did another colonoscopy and EGD, took biopsies, ruled out infections and cancer and colitis..so I think maybe Bill has helped me out here. I'm going to check with my family doc when I see him in September.

They're taking the drain out next Tuesday; I'm still not even close to the levels that they want when they would normally remove drains, but my doc says it has to come out at 5 weeks...what happens after that is anyone's guess.

Haven't heard back from the oncologist yet, don't know when I will..
Janice

OH! and I REFUSE to watch Vick play football tonight! (It may be a small protest, but, it's my protest!)<!-- Edit -->

Janice-
My dear friend, I wish I had let you know about the bile diarrhea sooner. It is HORRIBLE. I have had a better time with it since my rdo. I think that has to do with me eating better though. Some doctors say it will go away on it's own when your body adjusts to to gall bladder. My GI says it won't completely and I will suffer from it forever. That is when I took her advice and tried the Questran. Ina couple days All was better. Some times you have to take it 2xs a day. I got away with once a day. The Colestid I also got away with once a day, but did use it 2xs if things were getting out of wack. I used the Questran first thing in the morning when I got home from work. I was told to take it before meal, but this worked better for me and I think it is because wouldn't eat after work and I just went to bed. So it would grab up all the bile I was dumping in my intestine.
Oh, I was also lucky enough to have a PCP that sat me down and explained how it worked because it is a cholesterol med. He said they found out Qestran and Colestid bind with bile in your system and since we don't have control over whe it gets dumped in the intestine this absorbs all th extra bile and regulates us again. He also explained how to stop diarrhea when you have a stomach bug. It's the same principal. When you eat and the food hits your stomach the gall bladder is told to squeeze bile in the small intestine. Well if you vomit no food binds with the bile and it causes bile induced diarrhea. He doesn't treat the diarrhea, he treats the vomiting to keep some food in there to absorb the bile and the diarrhea goes away. Magic huh!?
Anyway, get some and I am sure you will feel better in that department anyhow. If you are anything like me if I can stay off the throne multiple times a day I am feeling better already.
Please be careful returning to work. I wish I could send a magic spell your way to remove your pain. You are one tough lady and I still admire your strength and courage. You have inspired many here and I am sure you have inspired many around you at home too. I am still praying the dranage stops and hope the need for chemo isn't founded. I know you will meet this latest test head on and whip it's butt! yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

I am off to lay down, getting very sore and i have to wait another 4 1/2 hours for more pain meds.

Take care,
Bill devil

Dearest Friends, so I heard back from my oncologist last evening; he's going to send the tissue sample to California for the oncotype testing; I should have my "score" back in two weeks.

If the score is high (0-100) then this means that the cancer is aggressive, and I face a real risk of this stuff coming back early and with a vengeance; if that's the case then it's chemo for me. If the score is low, then no chemo and no more surgery and just the aromatase inhibitors (the hormonal therapy). The tricky part comes in when your score falls into that middle category. If this happens (and knowing my luck...) then I may be looking at additional surgery for the lymph nodes and/or preventative chemo. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Tom came home yesterday and I was able to sleep well for the first time in about ten days, so that has helped me a lot. I met with the psychologist friend on Friday and that is going to help me too. This morning (after going to church for Bill!!), I went to my chiropractors office and got a massage, my back, neck and shoulder muscles have been screaming! That poor girl, she worked so hard on me, but she broke those knots up and tonight, hoo-boy! is my back tender!! but I feel better today than I have felt in quite a while.

They're taking the drain out Tuesday, even though I'm still draining about 75 cc's more in a 24 hour period than they normally want before pulling the thing. I guess (and Kitt can tell me more about this), is at 5 weeks, the drain have to come out because the risk of infection really jump...and boy wouldn't that be a heck of a note to get an infection now! So Tuesday, out it comes!

Thanks everyone for standing by me!!! I so needed all of you and your notes!!
love,
Janice

Hi Janice,
I join the crowd praying for low numbers. I'm so glad you are taking care of yourself, with the massage and visit with your psychologist friend. That can mean everything--the mind-body connection is so important. I'm glad you're getting some rest as well. It's never good when you're not getting enough sleep.

I hope all goes well when Draino goes bye bye. Hopefully things will calm down on their own.
I'm with you in spirit, friend.
Take care,
Denise

Good Morning Janice,

I am on my knees praying for low scores for you.  This is one time when you don't want to go for the highest score :)

Drains are used  to prevent post-operative swelling and fluid buildup. Drains are placed after to enable  serum that collects in the surgical bed to drain away and collect into a bag. When the 24 hour drain output reduces below a certain level, it may be safely removed. Even so, fluid may continue to collect in the surgical site, forming a collection called "seroma". As you continue to have a greater output then normal please do have your doctor talk with you about what to expect when "Draino" rides off into the sunset.

I am guessing here but I believe you have JP Drains.

Jackson-Pratt drain - This consists of a tube connected to a see through collection bulb. The bulb has a drainage port which can be opened to remove fluid or air so that the bulb can be squeezed to create suction. The drain should always stay below the area of the wound.

Understanding the ways that microorganisms are able to spread is vital to the prevention of infection. The following are the components of the chain of infection:

* Causative agent

* Reservoir of the agent

* Portal of the agent's exit from the reservoir

* Mode of the agent's transmission

* Portal of entry into the host ( the drains in your case)

* Susceptible host.

The longer the drains are in place the more open you are to an infection.  I would believe that is why the drains must come out ASAP.  You have 2 portals of entries with your drains as the breaks in your skin provide direct route for bacteria.

Do not let this info scare you as many patients have IV's and Catheters for long periods of time.  I cannot remember if you are on an antibiotic?
I am sure your Doctor will be able to explain this better then I have.

You know you can always email me. :-)

I am glad your session went well on Friday and your hubby is home.  That has to make you feel better.

Thinking of you as always,
Love,
Kitt

Thank you everyone, you all know how I feel about you! I actually (knock on formica!!) feel halfway human today...I think that massage really broke up some serious tension and set some toxins free and out of here...boy, I really feel better...not up to Bea's level!, but getting there!
Anne, we've sent 3 sons off to college and I'm with you! Tom went to the Naval Academy and is now flying F18's on his 4th tour in the middle east; Chris is in Tucson and Kellen lives east of San Francisco. I miss my boys, even now!

Joy, thank you!! I appreciate it! Kitt, boy, your knowledge is such a God-send; you're always able to fill in the holes and shed light on everything we're going through, Thank you!

Bill, Denise, Mary, Bea!! Let's all hope for a great week for everyone!
love you!

Hi Janice,
Glad that you felt better today! I second the motion for a good week. Wow, 3 sons all over the country. I'm sure you're appreciating technology. The internet helps so much when you want to keep in touch. I'm sure they all wish they lived closer now that you're having a health challenge. Wow, you've got vacations already planned to some great destinations!

Anne,
It is hard to take your kids off to college. I always had withdrawal symptoms! The first year is the worst. I remember making my son hook me up with IM, so we could talk online. It was a godsend. Good luck with your adjustment. He's off to college--a good reason to be away!
Take care.

Kitt,
I agree with Janice--you have so much knowledge and information to share, and it's greatly appreciated. Hope all is well and you're feeling contented and healthy.

Take care all,
Denise

Janice,

Glad to hear you are feeling better today so enjoy.  You know I am always glad to provide info re any health care questions that I can.  I know I am like a sponge when I am going through medical issues myself and I want as much info as possible.  Then I can sort through what makes sense and what does not apply to me.

You know I am a huge fan of yours my friend.  :-)

Anne,

I have one for you,  I watched my wonderful 18 year old granddaughter go off to college on Saturday and I was a mess all day, the tears and the memories of 18 years of watching her grow into a princess and now she is off.  I did not go along to take her to school as I wanted her to have the time with her Mom and Dad.

I remember when I sent my firstborn off to boot camp as he was a Marine and he never moved back home. sad

It is hard to watch them leave the nest.  I am sure you are very proud of your son as you have a right to be.

Denise,

Hoping you have your classroom all set and wow, this is it.  Make it your best year ever and saver the memories good and not so good.  You will have them with you forever in your heart.

Happy Tuesday to All,

Hugs,

Kitt

Hi Bea, I'm glad to see you back, I missed you!

I wish I had better news today. Tom & I went to the PS appointment and long story short, I'm developing capsular contracture, where scar tissue is forming around the tissue expander; I have an infection and they lymphatic system is draining excessive amounts into the space from the mastectomy, so much that they can't remove my drain today, or who knows when. So I'm back on an antibiotic; my Dr. withdrew 150cc's of saline from the tissue expander because the pressure from all of the above was stretching on are of the skin and could easily damage or tear it (and because it's numb, I can't feel anything if it is happening).

He says he has to watch me very closely, there's absolutely nothing he can do about the drainage and he may very well have to go back in and remove the tissue expander, the scar tissue and allow my tissues to all heal before we try again.

All in all a boo-hoo day.
Janice

Going back to the Dr again today, we'll see what he has to say..maybe more surgery?, maybe more wait and see? I think the antibiotic is helping, I don't feel as queasy and fatigued (of course I only got 3 1/2 hours of sleep last night, so that will change!). The drainage is still up there but the pain is a little better; I guess it's a question of scar tissue development and I don't know how to judge that.

If all is okay, we're heading up to the cottage for the long weekend...so have a good weekend everyone.

Dear Janice,

You are so brave and yet I know this is all really hitting you hard.  I am praying that your news at the Doctors today is better.  Please know I am here and if you need anything just let me know.

I hope you are able to go to the cottage and look out at the beautiful bridge and think of me here in MN as I envy your bridge.  Just stay in the moment as you gaze upon that bridge and remember you are on a bridge to a cure yourself.  You will make it through and we are all here to support and love you.

Gentle Hugs my dear friend,

Kitt
