I have suffered with Gerd/LPR for about 3 years with the typical symptoms, lump in throat,   difficulty swallowing, extreme heartburn constant throad clearing, strained voicebox, excess mucus in throat etc.  I have tried numerous otc remedies and prescribed medication such as prevacid and Nexium amd have found only temporary relief at best.  I have been getting more and more depressed as time went on and was fairly certain that this would kill me some day although I know that people can suffer with this for many years.

I have researched this endlessly on the internet and was coming to the conclusion that there is no cure and that suffering with this would be a fact of life.  To my surprise I found that a large number of fellow sufferers have found relief at earthclinic.com.  They have been using a remedy which involves the use of Apple Cider Vinegar.  I have seen ACV listed here before and tried it without success but  looking  back I was trying to cure the symptoms and that's not intent with the remedies at Earthclinic.com.

The more popular remedy is one put forth by a memeber known as "Ted from Bankok" in which he claims that the problem people have with Acid Reflux is the result of the the foods we eat (pretty much everything) weaken the body's PH levels and that by following his method for alkalizing the body that the digestive processes will start to work the way they are supposed to.

His remedy  is 2 tblsp of Apple Cider Vinegar (preferebly Braggs ACV) with a half tsp of baking soda in 4 ounces of water, 3 times daily for 5 days then 2 days off.

I have been following this regimen for 3 months now and I cannot begin tell you how much of a Godsend this has been for me and the possitive change its had on my life.  I've  been a member of this board for a couple years and I urge eveyone who suffers with this to go and check out earthclinic.com and read all the post regarding Acid Reflux and Ted's remedies.

Good luck to all of  you

I'm happy you found a remedy that works for you. I know how frustrating it is to think that you will have to suffer for teh rest of your life with that curse. I also felt that it would kill me, but deep inside I knew it wasnt enough to do so. Unfortunatly, I though then. I'm sure some people here will have good luck with that as you have. Any remedy that keeps you from having surgery, if you dont really need, is a good find.

Surgery is a hard decision to make. But unfortunatly ACV and me didnt mix. I tried it and my gag relfex sent it out my nose and a bit in to my wind pipe...talk about burning!! I tried it a few more day later for 4 days and didnt feel the difference. I guess if I wouldnt of had such a bad sliding hernia it would of been different.

Wouldn't the chemical reaction between the vineger and baking soda cause gas build up in your stomach? I'm a teacher and when you mix the two you get a very volital reaction. I don't see how you are unable to avoid problems from this. Do you wait for the foaming to stop or what?

Sean,

On HealingWell we strive to seek a balance between alternative and traditional approaches. I feel strongly, both approaches have value for anyone seeking healing.

Discussions however, should be balanced and suggestions concerning the scientific validity of such remedies are open for discussion also.

I think Joy has a good question and I am interested in the answer myself.

I could not resist and had to try it as I happen to have the Bragg's ACV in the house.  Yes is foamed right up and then died down.  I did not drink it however as ACV and me don't do well together.

Respectfully,

Kitt

I'm interested as well. I've been seeing a lot of ads on the web saying ACV does cure acid-reflux.

Yes joy, you need to wait for the foaming action to subside while stirring before drinking.

People have posed some of the same questions at Earthlink and some are skeptical about how using Viniegar an acid will cure Acid Reflux.   To get the information first hand visit the site but essentially the ACV has a lower acidic level that whats currently in your stomache.  The addition of the ACV attacks some of the bad bacteria  and increases your body PH levels so that the stomache processess food more normaly without the exess acid buildup.

Hey dearests, I wana share some valuable info with you...

some people's problem is a defective sphincter...due to defective sphincter, the reflux occurs...the stomach PH is normal and there is Hpylori in their system so ...such people need surgery to heal/correct defective sphincter

some people's problem is a highly acidic stomach and their sphincter is not really defective, SO with such remedies that improve stomach acidity, the reflux is healed!

some people have a very acidic stomach and a defective sphincter, and also a hernia= these people suffer the most and need surgery most likely especially if the hernia is really bad

some people have HYPLORI which causes the stomach to be SO acidic, leading to reflux...they take meds, heal the bacteria HPYLORI and need not to do surgery since their sphincter is OK

To know which someone belongs to, one needs to go into the CT scan ESOPHAGUS TRANSIT TEST, where you drink barium, they shake you up and they see if the BARIUM you drank went up to your esophagus; if it did, then the sphincter door is not closing completely and they then conclude your reflux is specifically due to a defective sphincter like mine...

Goodluck friends
wish you all the best

I havent done my surgery as yet, and haven't decided on it:( I take 2 PPIs per day and still have reflux...my sphincter just doesnt work

Everyone is different and what works for some does not necessarily work for all.  I have read all of the theories about the causes of Reflux and I am far from convinced that surgery and drugs are the only options but for some this may be true.

I can only relate my experiences with Reflux and the success I've enjoyed with the alalizing remedy.  My LPR/Gerd symptoms have made me miserable for a long time and my voice box  used to be so strained after a short conversation that I had a hard time reading bedtime stories to my kids.  Combined with the extreme heartburn and palpatating throat and excessive mucus and more really made for some awful times that so far appear to be behind me.

Best of luck finding what works for you.

Thanks Sean B

You are right, what works for some does not work for others.  If you have found something that works for you then I am happy so please do stick with what feels right for you.

With kindest personal regards,

Kitt

Just had to add one more easy remedy that worked for me... change to a non-mint toothpaste! I was recently hospitalized for j-pouch surgery and couldn't figure out what was setting off my GERD when I was on IVs and eating nothing for over a week! I knew mint could be a catalyst, but I had never thought about brushing my teeth setting off my acid reflux. (I don't swallow my toothpaste, after all!) After changing to cinnamon (Crest original flavor also worked) my reflux settled down, and I was able to reduce my omeprazole to 1 tab in the am (as opposed to 3 per day.)

Hi UC Vet,
Good thought! I've always been so careful with mint, and never thought about the mint in my toothpaste!
Thanks for sharing.

That explains why I always reflux after brushing my teeth.
Thanks!

I think the 2 days off gives your body a chance to requlate your own ph levels.  I've now been following this regimen for about 5 months and its the only thing that has given me any relief  for any lenght of time and requires no prescription drug use.  I have had some reoccurrence of symptoms but very mild in compariosn to what they used to be and can typically be gotten rid of with another dose.  I find that it also works extermeley well if after eating a large meal and you have indigestion it disappears almost instantly.  There are references that indicate that servere acid relflux may require more baking soda (up to 2 tblsp) and I have begun to increase the amount ,it says to do this slowly and bulid up as it may cause stomache upset.

Wish you the best,  I saw postive results fairly soon so you should definitely notice an improvement within a couple weeks.  Let me know how you make out

Thank you for responding!
I hope it works!
Just had Gallbladder removed last week
and the reflux is not gone so I am looking for a way to take care of this!
I can tolerate the ACV, before reading your post I took it with apple juice but this morning I did with water, it is easier with juice!! :)
I am still not able to eat much and I lost 30 lbs so I need a solution to this problem
thanks again!
