Getting it done next Wed. I'm a little nervous because of the comments on here about it. The nurse said it's a breeze but they aren't getting it done! lol I'm hoping this test shows something isn't right so I at least know why I have this!

I'm assuming you're talking about a monometry test. It's not a pleasant test, but it does tell you a lot. This combined with the upper GI and endoscopy should give your GI a pretty clear picture of what you have.

Let us know of the results. Best of luck!

Yep that's what I'm talking about. I had an EGD in June and dr said I had some inflammation of the esophagus and polyps which were benign.

The important thing is to relax.
1. They give you lidocain gel in your nose. Nasty feeling but not too bad.
2. They feed a long narrow tube (smaller than a straw) into your nose down to your stomach.
3. You will have to drink water through a straw as it goes down.
4. You will feel a gagging feeling as it goes down unfortunately. I thought I was going to throw up, but I didn't because my stomach was empty.
5. They will lay you back on the bed at a slight incline and adjust the tube if needed. The gagging is greatly reduced at this point. You just want to swallow alot.
6. Next you have to go to your happy place as you carefully follow the doctor's directions as you do ten perfect swallows of water.
7. After you get the swallows done, they quickly pull it out and let you rest there a moment as you recover your gag reflex.

It is not one of the most pleasant of experiences, but if you can relax it's survivable.

I wish you good luck.

Oh I hate gagging!! I try everything in my power to prevent it and vomiting. The nurse said they numb your nose and your throat and the tube is about the size of a spaghetti noodle. My gag reflex is quite touchy too!

The trick to dropping any NG tube down is to keep swallowing and not pull back as then you have to start over so just concentrate really hard and tell yourself you can do this. Swallow when you feel the gag reflex to get the tube past that area.

Hugs to you.

Thanks for the tips. Water makes my reflux act up really bad so should be interesting. They said I could still take prilosec in the morning. I have it at 11am so not eating shouldn't be a problem. I don't eat much in the day and when I do, it's later in the day.

Mine is very touchy, too.
If I see anyone throw up I feel like I'm going to also. Which can get ticky at times because I teach first graders.
Just focus and follow the directions you will get through it. I didn't like it at all, but I managed to go to my happy place during it.

You're brave with first graders! My son had his first day of kindergarten yesterday and the teacher told me a boy was so nervous he got sick. I wanted to vomit just hearing about it! Will definitely have to go to happy place that day!

Joy-
Unfortunately not all are done with lidocaine. My first 2 were done with only the numbing spray on the back of my throat. Believe me, after having it done that way twice the third time I had the lidocaine in the nose and it was a piece of cake! I also got to be the first tey used a "new" style on and it was so stiff I thought it was going to pierce the back of my skull. She tried that bout 4 times and switched to the old ones. That was my first experience with this test. Great fun indeed.

Take care,
Bill

I did not like this test at all BUT
you can get through it if I did and I really mean that. I am very nrevous in situations not in my control and my doc told me flat out this would not be fun. I don't know how you would feel about this but I am going to tell you how I got through it.
I said 'Lord, I really don't want to be here right now but I know you are here with me and that is all the strength I need. I literally held out my hand ever so slightly and held tight. I would pray the Our father in between the nurse telling me to swallow and before I knew it , it was over. I was never so happy !!!
We will be thinking of you and we will cheer when you are done !
God bless, love, Anne

I've been fortunate that in the ten years I've taught I've only had 3 episodes of children throwing up in the classroom: trash can, floor, and my desk! (yeck!)
After that, I told the kids first day "if you feel sick get out of here and run to the bathroom. You do not need to tell me. I'll know what's happening".

Good luck with the test. (((((((hugs))))))))

This test was hard for me too. The first time the tube hit the back of my throat and some how was choking me so my reaction was to grab the tube and pull it out. The doctors got scared and told me to relax and I yell "you werent the one choking". I apologized and the second time I swallowd when I felt it in my throat and it went down easier. Very weird feeling.

This was the defnieing test for me though. Barium swallow didnt show a hernia only light reflux. After seeing the results of the test my GI specialist sent me to see the surgeon rigth away. I had a 6 out of a normal 14 LES pressure.

Like others said, relax and listen to the instructions. Swallow only when told to because if you dont it will mess with the test and you will have swallow again.

Take care,
Rafael

Ok. I'm going to assume mine will be low. I've been getting food stuck lately and it's really annoying! Feels like I'm either going to vomit or cough up a hair ball. lol I've tried taking big gulps of water to get it down but that doesn't help and water makes everything worse. How long do you have to wait to get the results?

I knew mine two days later. After my test I immediately went down to medical records and signed the forms to have them mailed to me. That way I was prepared to discuss them with my doctor when I saw him again.

Well I went to my GP today to see if I could get something for panic attacks so I could take Aciphex, the only med that actually worked. But she's having me take Protonix again twice a day. We will see how that works out.

I'm so nervous for that test tomorrow! I'm sure once I get there I won't be so nervous but I'm biting my nails at this point. I just don't want to gag! Ack

I'm back from my test! It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think the worst part was having to drink all the water, I feel like a water bed sloshing around now. Other than that my throat is pretty sore. I see the dr Monday about the results.

My dr didn't do the test, it was a rn that did it. She said my dr will probably get my results tomorrow but since I have an appt Monday will most likely wait until my appt to discuss them. I'm really curious to see what they found out. Good thing is my throat isn't sore anymore but I've been sneezing constantly and have a runny nose.
