I was on Nexium for 3 months and it cleared up my GERD issues with no side effects. However...I ran out of health ins. and a job so I decided to stop the horribly expensive Nexium and tried Zantac otc. I took 1 pill at bedtime. The first day  had a terrible headache below my left temple, along the upper jaw. I thought maybe I was getting a tooth ache. The next night I took another one. I was awakened out of my sleep with a pounding headache that felt like it was in a vise. My heart was racing so fast that I thought i was going to pass out. I had to take a little seditive and after about an hour my pulse settled down and was able to get some sleep. I don't know for sure that this was from the zantac but more than likely it was. Has anyone else experienced this? I had the same problem about 6 months ago when I was taking an IBS drug and antidepresent. I guess my system is sensitive to drugs. Any comments and advice would be wonderful. Thanks

Good Morning Carolyn,

Nexium, esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and stomach ulcers.

Zantac is in a class of medications called H2 blockers. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach.

You quit the Nexium cold turkey and started a drug in a different classification.  This may be your I am not  a professional I would suggest you call your physician.

Stopping a PPI cold turkey may cause rebound effect which could include the headache and tachycardia.

Good luck and be safe.

Good point Kitt...thanks. I do have a call into my Dr. I actually stopped the Nexium almost 2 weeks ago but did not have the side effects until I started the zantac more than a week later. I did try phasing off the Nexium by skipping a day between. At $160 a month I need to find something that I can afford and still be affective.

WHAT!!! No way! Do you have insurance on top of that? When I had ins. it paid for half of the script which would be about $80, then Astra Zeneca gave me a purple pill card that took another $50 which made the total out of pocket $30. That was duable, but now that I don't have ins. I can't pay $110 a month for 30 pills. Should I call them back to see if I can get the coupon? Where did you get yours? Life would be so much easier if I could just get back to the Nexium. I responded best with that. I just didn't want to have to be on drugs for the rest of my life. What a bummer. I already have low bone density and I heard that these pills can affect your bones.

Thanks for that little bit of info Joy.
