Welcome to the GERD forum! The scope through the throat is called an endoscopy, and with it they'll be able to see how your esophagus looks, look in your stomach, and your duodenum. They should be able to get a good read on your upper GI condition. Sorry to hear you're suffering with UC. A good friend of my son's suffers greatly from that, and I know it's tough.

Sometimes people with GERD get strictures in their esophagus, (a narrowing), and doctors need to dilate it. I believe they can do this during the endoscopy.

I'm sure that others here will be able to add to my comments. I've gotten a lot of help and support here.
This is a great forum, so stick around!
Take care,

Welcome to healingwell,
You'll find some great cheerleaders here. Many of us have had the Nissen surgery or waiting for it. A couple of us are waiting for the EsophyX TIF (I'm one.)

You asked a couple of questions: The upper scoping of the throat is called an endoscopy.
Also another test to ask for is a manometry test. It tests the reflexes in your esophagus and measures your LES.
A barium swallow is also good to have.

I hope things go good for you.
