Hello I am a 30 year old man, I have high blood pressure (pre-hypertension). I have a mitral valve prolapse.

I am taking Pantoprazole for Gerd. I was browsing side effects of this med and came accross an alarming fact. It said that heart attack and congestive heart failure were a rare side effect of this drug. I stopped taking it today and my stomach is in pain and on fire, my symptoms have returned already. I have been taking this for a few days over a month.

I love this med but these rare side effects concern me. I want to continue because it seems to help so much but why take the risk?
I wonder if anyone could shed some light on the subject, How high a risk and is it dangerous to take pantoprazole? How high risk are the rare side effects i mentioned above?

I will post a website of rare side effects....

Thanks for your help in this...
God bless!

I should also add to this above that i also take Lisiniprol for prehypertension, xyzal for allergies, and nasonex and alprazolam as needed.

Hello and welcome to the GERD/Heartburn Forum.
I would strongly advise you to call your physician and discuss your fears with him.  Remember all meds come with rare side effects.  What you have read feels to me like it has kicked you into high anxiety re your health.
With your history this is often normal as anxiety can really stick it to our mind and the thoughts start to spin with what ifs?
Try to remember to stay in the moment and don't anticipate the worse case scenario. I wish you well and perhaps another member will have more information for you.
Take care,

Hi LunaticBiPolar,
Interesting handle! I also have mitral valve prolapse, and take xyzal, and flonase (like nasonex) for allergies. I've taken 40mg of Protonix twice a day for 5 years without any side effects. I feel very comfortable with this drug, although I know how hard it is to take something new, when you read all the extreme side effects it might have. My doctor has me researching an osteoperosis drug that has some pretty scary possible side effects. I can see why you'd worry.

You are the one who ultimately decides, but I wouldn't hesitate to take the Protonix if it is helping you. I had the GERD surgery in February (mainly for the uncontrollable asthma it caused) and still take Protonix every other day, due to my very reactive stomach. Hopefully in a year or so, when the healing is complete, I'll be able to try getting off it, but my family doc (who really knows my stomach), isn't in a hurry to get me off, and thinks I'll need it at least intermittently, always. My surgeon told me I could stop immediately, but I have a terrible stomach, so I'm hanging on to it a bit longer.

I think you'll find lots of people here who've been taking Protonix for a long time. I don't think you need to worry. If it's relieving your symptoms, be thankful, and take it! Of course this is a decision best made between you and your physician.

I'm glad you've joined us. This is a great forum with lots of very supportive and knowledgeable members.
I'm sure others will be by to comment.
Good luck!
