   Hi--
I'm a visitor from the Ulcerative Colitis Forum, but it's beginning to look like
I need to be here, too!

Just got taken off Remicade therapy for UC--it backfired on me and resulted in temporary (I hope) Lupus symptoms.  On Prednisone for that.  Then started getting heartburn and then had a very bad night with great difficulty swallowing, and
extreme muscle pain all over my neck and down both shoulders into both upper arms.
My GI doc was flummoxed to say the least.  Now awaiting results of CT scan of head, neck and chest.

From all the reading I've been doing here, it's beginning to look like familiar territory
to all lot of you folks.  I've had pvc's for years, but not heartburn--this is new to me--
being 70 yrs old, I knew things were wearing out, but this is getting a bit much.

I've already learned a lot here--was already cutting down to small meals and
nothing after 5pm, etc.  Doc put me on prilosec and that seems to be helping, too.

So, hope you've got room for one more fellow-traveler--I need all the help I can get!!  Gotta get well--I've got 4 horses, 4 dogs, and a bunch of barn cats who still need me as much as I need them.

Thanks--

Michigoose-
Welcome! Not sure what my shoulder pain from, but I have been dealing with a similar pain as yours for a couple months or so. I just had an MRI and am waiting on the results. Please feel free to ask us anything, we love to help if we can.

Take care,

Michigoose,

Hello and welcome to GERD/Heartburn forum. I am sorry you are going through a tough time.

I am wondering if your Prednisone is causing many of your sx?

Prednisone use of any period can give rise to many side effects such as , abdominal pain, heartburn, blurring of vision, peptic ulcers, infections, pain in the hips or shoulders, osteoporosis, occurrence of acne and sleeplessness. Some of the less serious side effects of prednisone include weight gain, stretch marks on the skin, swelling in the face, nervousness, increase in appetite and hyperactivity. Just a thought. You certainly could have GERD too and yes we always have room for new members so I am so glad you joined us. Do stick with us as you will see the members in this forum are kind and caring, wise and wonderful.

Welcome aboard.

Hi Kitt--
Thanks for the reminder about the pred--I've been on and off it a lot in the past 20 yrs, and I know there's no free lunch--you pay for what you get.  Kept it to a minimum, but bad flares of UC did me in sometimes.  I was beginning to suspect the pred might have irritated my stomach, etc., too.

Glad I came here--certainly learned a lot I wish I didn't have to know!!--But I feel better knowing more about things now.  It's always scarier not knowing what you're dealing with.

Thanks again

Hi Michigoose,

In my experience neck and shoulder pain would not be caused by GERD. GERD can only directly irritate areas which come in direct contact with the leaking stomach contents or vapors. So it can certainly and commonly does irritate the throat.

Since this sounds like a new symptom for you, it seems that the throat pain could be making you subconsciously tighten your shoulder and neck muscles as sort of a defense mechanism, perhaps while you are sleeping and unaware of it. If the muscles are held in tension for a while, then it seems they could quickly become sore and painful.

Hi Speden--

I'm beginning to think you're right--the neck and shoulder pain is probably a result of tension and also goes along with the lupus-like symptoms I'm experiencing as a result of remicade treatment.  Most likely fibromyalgia.  I'm hoping things will get better as I come off the remicade.

I think it will take some time, but hope the joint and muscle pain will ease off.  I'm hoping the GERD will ease somewhat when I'm finally able to get off the prednisone I'm on for the joint pain.  Good grief, it's enough to make you swear off any and all medicines--their all two-edged swords, so to speak.

Of course, if we weren't all living so much longer, we wouldn't be developing all these problems, right--lol.

At any rate, I'm still happier above ground--I've got a lot of things to do yet, so I'm getting into aloe vera, Bragg's AC vinigar, papaya and all the rest!! It'll give me a little more to do in retirement!!

Best to all yeah
