Griff, I take probiotics. All it does is keep me from tooting. ;))
Have you ever thought of laser eye treatment. I had mine done two years ago. I used to be blind as a bat, but now I see 20/15. :)
The surgery is not that bad. I barely felt the pressure of the suction. My eyes were horribly blood shot for two weeks, but no pain. I had to wear special googles for a day and every night for a week. My vision was blurry for three days and took a full month for my vision to perfect.
Good luck in seeing the doctor.

I had to travel all the way to Gainsville to see the top specialist in the area (he has a satellite office in the nearby town). It cost $2,200 per eye. :(

Griff, I would of had it done years ago, but I couldn't afford it back then. I'm 41 now, he said I may need reading glasses in a couple of years, because the surgery doesn't affect the aging part of eyes. :(

Please ask the doc if it's a vitiamin defecency that's affecting you.

My brother had it done when he was 32. He is very happy about it. He was blind as a bat before and still doesn't need glasses. He's five years older than me.

Griff thi ssurgery takes a toll on you in more way than one. not being able to in take as many calories as I need has affected me in wierd ways. Some times I get tunnel vision. Some times I feel like my brain reacts in slow motion or like I'm looking through a camera...its weird. I also feel dizzy and faint at times. I know I should be taking chewable vitamins but they irritate my esophogus too much.

I'm going to ask my GP if he recomends seeing a nutrionist and ask him to do some blood work.

Hope this gets worked out soon.

Hi Rafe-

I empathize with you.  My brain is messed up from the anesthesia and the pain meds.  I've lost whole days including pre-op days.   I'm going to ask for the op notes of my medical records.  Being given Versed for anesthesia induction is a good possibility.  If I don't make notes I don't remember things for even a few minutes sometimes.  I hope getting off pain meds will make things better.

I don't tolerate liquid vitamins or the chewables, so I am dissolving my tablet in just a little hot water.  It doesn't taste very good, but a lot better than chewing them.  I could add a little juice I suppose.  Just watch out for grit that doesn't dissolve.  I can swallow that, but I didn't have a full wrap.

Griff-

I find I feel better if I try to move more. I need a nap for an hour out of every 4, but have to get up and practice deep breathing to keep the alveoli from collapsing. I walk around to keep from getting DVT. Walking is lots better than heparin shots in the belly.

I have pain in my right wrist where they put a radial artery line to measure blood pressure... right next to the cyst in my wrist. They stuck me twice, left a bruise halfway round my wrist and halfway to the elbow. I used to do these sticks for a living and never left a mess like this. They don't even put in these lines in most hospitals. Shoulders and arms hurt even with pain meds.

I just found out I am supposed to be sleeping propped up. Why didn't they tell me this before now too? I have a great web and frame chair support for lower backs. I just got it out of my truck and put it on the couch with a pillow on top. I use it upside down. I know they're available online, but watch price. The actual cost is $2.00 by the case. They're often available for $10 or less in pharmacies. I'm going to start using my airplane neck pilow too.

Greetings Folks,

I'm 18 days post op from my Nissen for "an uncommonly large hiatal hernia" and for the most part feeling great! The toughest parts for me were needing to sleep on my back for the first 1.5 wks and the gas pains in the front of my shoulders. Thanks for the tips about walking to ease the gas. Now my biggest challenge is keeping to the soft foods. I'm dieing for a steak! *laugh*.

Some people have been commenting on vitamins and nutrition. I'm drinking meal replacements. I use 1% milk to keep away from the fat of whole milk, but, I just can't stomach skim milk *blah*.

I don't get to see my surgeon until late November so I'm being pretty careful, or at least I thought I was. I figured I could start lifting 10 lbs AFTER the two weeks so being almost 3 weeks post op I brought a gallon (10 lbs) of milk home today. Lesson learned, stick to 1/2 gallons for now. My stomach was quite tender for several hours afterwards.

Thanks for the tips about liquid pain meds. I wish I'd thought about that when I picked up my prescription of Tylenol 3's.

The information I've learned here has been good. I will pass the site on to my surgeon and see if he'd like to recommend it to other patients. It would have been so useful to have read it before the surgery.

All the best

Wow, griff! I'm really bummed to hear that you aren't doing any better. I'm very shocked that the surgery didn't work for you.

I will keep you in my prayers.
