hi there,
I am about 4 months post-nissen with conitinued burning issues. I have had all the required tests and we have found that indeed I do have continued BILE reflux after my nissen. Bummer, but here is my question. I have also been concurrently dealing with lower GI issues that I have attributed to IBS stemming from taking many antibiotics during my long process of finding an answer to this reflux.....gurgling stomach, gas, bloating.....ususally mild, but after a recent dose of rifaximin pre-nissen, symptoms have gone wild. Turns out it is FRUCTOSE MALABSORPTION. Anyone dealt with this? When I eat the very restricted diet needed, my lower gi symptoms ease( as of last week). My question.....Has anyone heard of this fructose issue being an underlying cause of refractory GERD? If i have had this on some level for a long time, could this be the root cause?
any info would be appreciated!

Hi lstek,
This is Marie.
I am experience burn throat and sour and bitter after nissen surgery. Been 2 months.
Do you experience sour/bitter taste though?
Do you have to take something for your bile reflux?
I also experience bile reflux while back. The dr put me on some type of bile med.
It help with the burn. Now, I am reflux probably both...

Thanks.
Take care.
Marie

Istek,

Your situation is very interesting. I have heard of fructose intolerance which causes an allergic reaction to fructose with symptoms you describe but I don't think it causes GERD but it might exacerbate the symptoms of GERD. Have you had any post-nissen tests to see if you are still refluxing? Some drs do it at 8 weeks and others wait 6 months to one year before testing to see if the Nissen is working. I would think that the swelling from the initial surgery is gone now and you could get an accurate test. You would think that eliminating fructose would do the trick to treat your symptoms.

Do you continue to have symptoms of bile reflux and what are they?
