I have GERD and my doctor suspects I have a hiatal hernia; I have an EGD scheduled for Nov. 17 to confirm this. I've had nausea and a lump in the throat feeling that's come and gone for several months; the last few weeks I've had chest pains that seem consistant with a HH. I recently started taking Nexium and changing my diet to avoid common GERD trigger foods and to eat smaller meals more often -- these changes are definitely helping although I still get some mild symptoms off and on.
But the last few days I've had a feeling of "tightness" in my upper center abdomen (above navel, below breastbone), sometimes radiating slightly out to the sides. I guess "tightness" is the best word to describe it.... the feeling makes me want to involuntarily suck in my stomach, and I have to make a conscious effort to relax my abdominal muscles (by relax, I mean like letting your stomach pooch out when you slouch or something), if that makes sense.... it usually happens after meals or even just after drinking water but sometimes happens for no apparent reason. It's not exactly painful, just uncomfortable and feels weird....
Could this also be a symptom of GERD or HH? Is it worth calling my doctor next week or should I just wait for my EGD?
Maybe I'm worrying for nothing -- it's just getting hard to ignore every little ache and pain since I still don't know exactly what's going on with me (though my doctor is pretty sure the EGD will just show signs of GERD and/or HH)! When I know what's wrong with me I don't normally have any anxiety since I know what to do about it -- it's just when I don't know that I can let myself get a bit anxious ;)
Medications: Nexium (GERD), Singulair (allergies), Tazorac (acne), Clindagel (acne)
