|New here and love the info and support that is given to one another. For about 7 years now, I have suffering with a chronic cough. The first nearly 4 years I chose to go untreated as I was pregnant and nursing back to back. Once done with all of that, I began attacking my problem. First with my GP who ran me through a barage of tests (mostly for asthma) and all came back neg. Then I started the hit parade of specialists; ENT first then Gastro.|
Both determined that I had NO acid reflux/GERD/esophagial damage. After about a year's worth of visits and meds, my Gasto. tried the "BRAVO" probe on me (a small device attached to the side of the esoph. to measure acid levels). Again finding NO acid reflux. So, I went Allergist, Chiro., Pulm. all with no relief. So, once I had given up on it being a GERD problem, I found a cough clinic in the Bronx.
He attacked the problem in 3 phases.
1. PND: Deconamine (best relief in 7 years but waned after a few weeks).
2. Asthma: Prednasone (worst coughing in 7 years and stopped it after 4 days).
3. Acid Reflux: 10mg Metoclopram 3/dy...30mg Pevacid 1/dy and 150mg Ranitidine at night
* This 3rd round attacking possible acid reflux, which I was convinced I did NOT have with all the previous tests and no symptoms, seemed to make me feel like I have it now; strange? I actually feel like food comes up *now* and have a full feeling with small portions. I was told it would take at least 3 months before I'd notice results but the only results I experience now are ones that seem like GERD.
>Food comes up easily (during eating or right after).
>Minor burning sensation right below my sternum (sometimes).
>Cough right after eating most times.
>Clearing throat constantly (even before GERD thought).
>PND throughout the day.
>Severe coughing fits in the morning and without warning throughout the day.
>Scary chest pains on left side at night or during day.
And so on. Now, I am scheduled with 2 new docs; ENT and Cardio. I feel like I am starting from scratch all over again. But, with the help from so many posts that I've read here, maybe I have a new direction afterall? Maybe I really do have GERD? I can no longer handle my chronic cough and what it's done to my energy level and overall mental outlook on the day. My kids don't know me as a non-coughing mommy and I cannot even read a book to them without coughing through it. And, even if I do read to them, my throat feels full or tired from doing so. I am hoping with others here, I can get through and hopefully finally find some much needed relief.
Not many around me understand the suffering I endure daily. It's so difficult for me to get out of bed to know that I am about to cough til it hurts for an hour. OK, done blathering on...but it's good to know I really am not alone.
