Garlic is a common GERD trigger; however, every person has different triggers so you'll need to experiment to find out what works for you.  Sometimes you may find that you can handle a small amount of trigger foods as long as you don't go overboard!
I don't believe the meds are truly addictive; however, some have a rebound effect -- if you quit taking them, the GERD may get worse for a while then get better.  Just ask your doctor about any medicines you may want to try :)
