I am so new to this forum... my daughter found it for me actually.. after numerous tests being done on me thru out the years....29 to be exact...my pain started shortly after the birth of my daughter.. i lifted my leg onto the toilet to dry my legs and this awful pain appeared and would not go away.. i was tested for gall baldder problems nothing.. back then they gave you a shot called a hypo or something to help with the pain..i was out of it and not able to care for my children after this shot.. so i learned to breathe thru them...like you do when you are breathing thru your contractions during labor... and also hold my warm hand over the "monster" as i call it,,,,It orginally started only on my right side and would appear when i got nervous ,scared or did something strenuous ( I am not a very good speller so bare with me) anyway i have had this going on for about 29 years.. sometimes not so bad...able to make it go down with the breathing.. but then a few years back it progressed to the left side and crawled to my mid section very rarely coming out on my right side anymore..Drs, thought it sounded like a hernia.. had tests mri  cat scans... nothing.. so one dr said it may be chrondoconitis...imflamation of the cartilidge on the rib cage,,but really exploritory surgery was the only way they were going to find out what it is..i didnt want to go that route since i was still able to control it by my breathing and warms hands covering it and feeling it go down.. i actually can feel it rise and crawl and rise and crawl  and afterwards for days i feel like i did a 1000 situps.. which is impossible for me to do...Tonight as i was talking to a friend in a store it popped out and i felt like a complete idiot doing my breathing and holding my stomache....i always say i am going to go to the ER next time so they can witness it.. but the pain is so intense i have to make it go away....i had an episode a few weeks ago.. just lying in bed with m hubby watching Tv and the monster comes out.. he held his hand over it... and i breathed.. and it went away onyl to come back again a few secs later.. i had 8 episodes that night.. and for the next several days i couldnt cough or laugh without it hurting me..

I have had a endoscopy.was having trouble swallowing...( which they knocked a tooth out when they had to remove the scope because i apparently started coughing) during that procedure they stretched my esofagus ( told you i am a bad speller) and my swallowing has gotten better that next week i had a colonoscopy and they removed a pre cancerout polyup...but everything looked fine.. i just recently had a cat scan so they could see if i did have a hernia that was growing because i hadnt had a ct scan for 4 years..didnt show a thing.. So I guess i am to just live with this pain...but it is so wonderful to read others also suffer with this monster.....hoping to get a response from other people who like me dont know what to do.. thanks for reading this.. and if there is a spell check on here somewhere i cant find it....AnnieFarber

Welcome to HW,
What your having sound muscular, if warmth and relaxation helps it. Have you had a barium swallow, momometry, or BRAVO?

Sorry, there's no spell check here. I wish there was, I have some trouble in that department, too.

Welcome,

I was hoping Joy would come along and mention other test you may want to discuss with your physician.

I am so sorry to hear you have had this pain for so long and certainly understanding your frustration.

I hope we are able to meet your needs here in HW.

Gentle Hugs,

Kitt

thanks for the responses....i was scheduled for the manometry..and something else test wise.. but i cancelled because of losing a tooth during the endoscopy.. which was part of a 3 tooth bridge..my pain is really not in my throat at all... much lower and travels to my mid section...i was wondering about a pet scan.. or even a sona gram.. i havent had either of those.. but i am so tired of telling Dr. about this and they never can tell me anything.. nothing ever shows up .., and during the office visits i try with all my mite to make it come out.. but it doesnt..i am on kapidex for gerd which i have ..and inflamation behind my voice box.. i think he called it my globies were swollen and that was why i was having trouble swallowing...and consant hoarseness...that all is fine.. i would be fine as frog hair if there was something for the "monster" i am on muscule relaxers but man those wipe me out 3 a day the dr told me to take... i only take at night.. i wouldnt get anything done if i took in the daytime...i will keep reading.. and am checking into magnesium... how much would i take of that?

Annie -
What you really need is a barium swallow.  It is non-invasive, no sedation, and will show if you have a hiatal hernia.  It will also pick up "nutcracker" esophagus and other conditions.  All you have to do is swalow the barium drink.

Are you seeing a gastroenterologist?  He would be the guy with the experience to diagnose your problem.  Are you taking acid reducers?  Do you have any other symptoms that might be reflux (GERD)?

If your diagnosis is a sliding hiatal hernia they will not necessarily do surgery.  It would depend on the size and how bad your symptoms are and whether they can be controlled medically.

So my latest appt with a general surgeon... she said she thinks it a muscle spasm or charlie horse in my stomach muscles.since it seems to travel along my stomach area.....and the only other option would be to do exploratory surgery...which I don't want to do.. It seems to lately come alive when I get nervous and scared.. and always if I bend a certain way....I can have as many as 8 episodes of these so called muscle spasm one right after the other... leaving me the next day feeling like I have done 500 situps....

Does anyone else have this happening...?

Have you tried seeing an osteopath or chiropractor? A cranial osteopath might help too. My osteopath works on soft tissues and muscles, not just bones. I have found it good at pinning down the source of various pains I have from time to time; my lower back fires pain messages to my hip and leg for instance. if you can get a good cranial osteopath recommended to you, I would definitely think it worth their opinion. Massage treatments might be worth a go too and some osteopaths do that too.
