I'm 21. After a surgery I was given some pain meds. It caused some GI problems - one day I had McDonalds and I had tons of heartburn and chest pain. Doc said GERD. The pain spread across my ribcage and I was given a PPI. After 5 weeks I felt better and stopped it, taking DGL instead.

A month later the pain came back, but different - it was only in my BACK this time, between my shoulder blades, stinging suddenly 1-6 hours after eating. I could soothe it with Gaviscon. The pain got bad, so I started the PPI for 12 weeks again, thinking I didn't fully heal. After stopping this time I was good for 2 months and then the "back-stinging" came back.

Why do I not have any other GERD symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, etc? All I have is this stinging occasional back pain. What is it?

Pete-
Not everybody has the same symptoms. Some have worse symptoms, some have no symptoms. That's "silent" GERD. There are various levels in between of discomfort also. I have had shoulder, rib, sternum, and back pain associated with GERD. Sometimes only one symptom and sometimes more than one. Really no rhyme or reason for it that I can see.

Take care,
Bill

I think it has to do with the Vagus nerve that runs down the back of your esophagus. The GERD affects it in different ways causing all sorts of symptoms.

I feel for you. I have the same pain. right between my shoulder blades. But I also have pain from my throat to my stomach. But i cant get over some of the burning back pain. It feels like a very deep sunburn? I feel like its burning a hole straight through me. Do you sleep propped up? Maybe that would help. I wish I could help more but I am not sure what to do myself. Just know I offer you support and hope you heal up fast.

It's a bummer. Mine started after a bout with cancer. Apparently the Chemo caused it.
I have had a few Stress tests so "they" tell me my ticker is good. But I still fear for my life when I get those twangs and pains.
Get yee to a stress test a little piece of mind is a wonderful thing.

By the way happy new year.
