Hi to all sufferers. I'm male 37 years old. My problem started in Nov 09 when I was eating my dinner and during it, out of the blue, it felt like my food wasnt going down my throat normally. I was finding it difficult to breathe. I got some fresh air and came back and finished the meal, scared.

I then swallowed a tiny piece of chicken meat unchewed in Jan 2010, and thought I was choking on it. Tried to cough it back up, but no luck. I wasnt choking, I was comfortable enough but in no shape to sleep. Went to A&E at 11pm at night, and was seen at 2pm the next day. Doc sprayed my throat, told me to swallow a few times, put camera down me and said there was nothing there. I was convinced it was stuck there somewhere, cause thats what the feeling was like (turns out this is a GERD type reaction). He told me to go home, relax and eat as normal. I knew there was no way I would be eating as normal.
For a week I ate just smooth foods to give my throat a chance to heal. I then tried to eat burger and chips a week later one night and 10 minutes later I thought I was being choked to death. Had to go for a 3 hour walk. Was still feeling choked, and had to sleep sitting up. Real scared this time, went back to porridge, youghurt, ice-cream diet. But to be honest, appetite was gone, afraid to eat.

Experimented with what foods were giving me a bad reaction, and white bread was a bad one. So eventually found some things I could eat and stuck with that. Added Pringles crisps to the diet, and went fine for a couple of days. Unfortunately made my already inflamed throat sore (even though I chewed all as much to a liquid as possible, little chards must have hurt my throat). So crisps were out. So just kept eating my porridge, ice-cream, biscuits soaked in tea, youghurt. Was losing weight though, 200lbs down to 170lbs.

Then a real scare one day after eating biscuits. After a snack I usually cough up a little phlegm, only the phlegm this time felt like it was a metre long, not the normal little blob that I could easily get rid of. Couldnt get it up and it felt like it was choking me. Major scared. Tried to swallow it back down and after some fresh air and a good hour walk, succeeded.

Read up on phlegm, and the two worst foods for phlegm, sugar and white flour. The main things my biscuits were made of. Eliminated them and the ice-cream from the diet, and stuck with my porridge and yoghurt. Problem was I was now 160lbs and my throat was still sore, even after sucking a pack of Strepsils for a week. The main pain during all this time was a pain in my MIDDLE back (maybe my lungs?). Usually a few hours after I eat, on a scale of 1-10 where 10 was unbearable, it's always been just a 2, and always gone when I wake up in the morning. But its there after eating.

So I decided to go to the G.P, see if he could know what the hell was wrong. Told him my story and he was surprised my weight had gone from 200lbs to 160lbs in 2 and a half months. Recommended a gastroscope at the hospital. Date was set for a month later. During that month my throat actually healed, and it felt fine when I was due the gastroscope. Done the gastroscope, no problem, throat - normal, just waiting on results back for stomach now. They said may be a bacterial infection, they'll let me know. Meantime they gave me a prescription, they said will help the lining of my stomach, 28 days of 10mg Losec Mups Gastro Resist Tabs PCO, and 20mg just Losec Mups Gastro Resist Tabs.

So Im on Day 4 taking these. Pain still there. Im hoping it will go after the 28 days, but from what I read on this thing, that looks unlikely. During this time I have changed my diet to see if it helps my digestion problems. Using the Food Combining technique, not mixing carbs with proteins at meals, eating fruits alone, and no acid fruits, no alcohol, no chocolate, all the usual GERD rules. Have been sleeping with a raised bed for a month or so as well.

Thats where I am at the moment and will let you all know how my progress goes.

Welcome niceguy,
I had acid reflux for nearly 10 yrs. 4 years ago I started coughing constantly. Nothing I did seem to help. I finally gave in and had the surgery. My cough is gone now and feeling fine.

I'm sticking around to answer anyone's questions on the surgery.

Great news for you. Hoping the pain in my middle back, which is the only pain I have at all, goes. Although reading that link about The Healthy Skeptic http://thehealthyskeptic.org article about GERD, whos says the problem needs more acid not less in the stomach, and all the negative stuff about Prilosec, I'm going to my GP on Monday to see what the story is. Do I really need 28 days of drugs, i will be asking him. I'm totally pain free apart from this slight pain in my middle back 2-3 hours after eating, and I dont want to get worse by having to take Gastro Resist tabs forever.

That pain in your middle back could be from reflux related.

Gerd can sometimes cause back spasms in the back. You have a nerve that runs down the back of your esophagus (vegus nerve). Sometimes when you are having acid reflux the nerve gets irritated and causes spasms in different places (back, chest, ribs, shoulders). It's odd, but it happens.

niceguy2010,

1) Get tested for fructose malabsorption & lactose malabsorption (via breath hydrogen breath testing)
2) Get tested for coeliac disease
3) Get tested for crohn's disase
4) Get you gallbladder checked
5) Get a manometry done (checks whether your LES is functioning properly)
6) Optional - get a 24hr PH test done.

Doctor's are quick to hand out drugs to fix the problem, but often it comes down to a simple allergy or coeliac disease. If your LES is fine, then it is probably an allergy. Save yourself the time and hassle...it can take people years to work out that they have an allergy or coeliacs disease.

Also, forgot to ask, did you get tested for H.Pylori?

Havent done any tests other than the gastroscope, and that was scary enough going into it. I am coeliac anyway, and I havent had wheat, dairy and all the bad stuff in years so my diets very good in that sense.
My diet was bad sugar, white flour (gluten free), alcohol, chocolate, soy wise for years so only in the last few weeks I've had to start eating clean. Also don't combine my foods at meals anymore. Eat very little fructose, lowish carbohydrate diet. So I'm eating as healthy as one can.
Reading by what some of the others went through on that manometry test doesnt sound like the test for me......I'll have to look into whats involved in those tests, any discomfort or anything involving choking/drowning sensations and I'll be running a mile. Don't swim, never put my head under water and have a fear of drowning...

After my gastroscope the girl gave me a prescription to "help the lining of my stomach she said". 28 days worth of MUPS. Reading the Healthy Skeptic's articles sounds like that was the last thing I need. She also said they will let me know if there was a bacterial infection present (the doctor took 3 biopsy samples during the gastroscope), so hopefully he can tell if its H.Pylori....hopefully....
On Day 7 now of this 28 day MUPS thing, no improvements anyway, still the slight pain in the middle back.

Bacterial Infections came back negative (including H Pylori). So thats good news. Doc says there was just some inflammation. Says I just have to finish my course of tablets and should be fine. Sounds too good to be true... Fingers crossed anyways.

I appreciate your faithfulness in writing and your specific accounts of your reflux episodes.   I can relate.  I just started taking that 24 hr. Prevacid - I'm maybe on day 6, but the food is still sitting in my stomach from 3 hours ago...  Thanks for the link from the healthy skeptic - I'll read it.

Dear Niceguy,
This is just my opinion, but I would ask my Dr. to test for esophgeal cancer.
I don't want to worry you, but my brother-in-law had the same symptoms and lost a lot of weight.
He told the Dr. it was because he couldn't eat. He constantly had this feeling of something stuck in his throat.
He could only eat pasta, soup, and soft foods.
They tested for cancer and he had it.
If it's caught early, it can be cured.
Also, gall stones can give you these symptoms.
I know a man who thought he had gerd, but it was stones in his gallbladder.
Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for advice.
A test for esophegal cancer? The result of the gastroscope said esophagus - normal. Is that not enough of a test?
I havent had a feeling of something being in my throat for a good few months now. That feeling went maybe a couple of weeks after I first swallowed that little piece of chicken. That sensation didnt last very long. My throat was sore for a few weeks then, but thats because it was inflamed. That also went after a few weeks. Throats been fine for at least a month. Have even been able to eat some chicken wings recently.
Im on Day 10 of the tablets and there are less occurrences of pain in the back/lungs, but the pain is still there. Hopefully after the 28 days it will be mostly gone.

Good luck to everyone.

I apologize....I didn't see where you posted the result of the gastroscope saying the esophagus was normal.
I'm very happy to hear you are feeling better.
Yes, good luck to everyone.

Joe,
You need to post your email on your profile, not on your post.  It should be visible to members only.  I don't know have access to the tools needed to remove it, but Kitt does.  Hopefully she'll come along and fix you right up.
Good Luck!
