Went for my ultrasound yesterday and my GB looked fine, normal size but now my doctor said today he wants me to go for a HIDA scan. Why would he want to do this when the ultrasound came out ok? I am confused.

The ultrasound really only looks for things such as stones. The hida scan will test the function of the gallbladder while filling and emptying. This is a very important tesy if you are having gallbladder symptoms, but no visible stones.

Thanks Bill, I was relieved when the Ultrasound found nothing serious but I guess my doctor is still determined that it is my GB that is making me ill most of the time.
Have you had the HIDA scan and what is it like?

Thanks again,
Tina Louise

Holy moly!! You have been through the ringer and back for sure. Why so many ailments my friend? I wonder if the fibromylagia is the source of most of it. I am now taking zantac after being on zegerid and other meds that just stopped working. How is prilosec for you?

I had a HIDA scan about 2 years ago after having a host of other tests, including an ultrasound. Just because something looks normal does not means it's functioning as normal...my esophagus is testament to that.

Tinlou-
I did have the Hida Scan about 5 years ago. I didn't have any problems with the Hida Scan, but the technician said some people can have a painful reaction when the gallbladder fills and empties. Mine wasn't working so I was lucky and didn't ave an attack when they did the test
I had been to the ER because of chest and back pain. The ER doctor told me it couldn't be my gallbladder because I was 40, fat, or female. How's that for a diagnoses. He did order an US and an EKG, both were normal. My GI doctor ordered an EGD with US and also a HIida Scan. The Hida Scan was bad even though I had no stones mine had just decided to stop working. Mine was bad enough that the surgeon my GI sent the results to called me and had me come in right away. That was a Thursday and he said I wouldn't make it through the weekend with how much pain I had and the results he was looking at. I saw him at 9:30am and was in surgery at 1:30 pm.

Take care,
Bill

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have to have a Hida now but I am holing it off on purpose because I am nervous about it. Any help on what to expect when I do go would be appreciated since I see some people have more problems with it than others. I am picturing myself getting sick while I am there and that makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks
Tina Louise

The ultrasound is just gel rubbed on your stomach and a wand rubbed around the area.
I've heard they give you an IV and the do a scan as your body processes it. I've heard some people fall asleep during it. It must be relaxing? ;)
