Hi all
Do any of the rest of you wonder if all the chemicals in our modern food help contribute towards GERD?  I've read so much stuff on the Internet saying the GERD is rising and that 100 years ago it was never as bad as it is now.  When you read the back of a jar or packet of something now it's astounding how many preservatives, colour additives and food enhanchers there are listed now.  Even milk lasts a lot longer in the fridge than it used to so you have to wonder what's now in it to make it stay so fresh.  I know I always suffer a lot less from indigestion when I eat a lot of fresh fruit and veges what does everything think/find?  Surely ingesting all those chemicals can't be that good for us???

I know I became allergic (acquired allergy) to a preservative that is found in many foods. I got it from eating processed foods, fast foods for 20 years after I got the kids mostly out of the house.

I have reflux triggered when I eat anything with sulfite preservative in it. Notable examples are french fries, sodas and lemon juice. Now that I've had surgery I can't reflux into my esophagus any more, but I still have the stomach heaving. It al ends up causing me to have tachycardia. Another common symptom of this particular allergy is migrane headache.

I've done extensive logging of my foods in a journal and have done lots of "chalenge testing," and consulted with an allergist, so I know my problem. Dollars to doughnuts I'm not the only person who has GERD triggers from chemicals in food.

(Milk lasts longer primarily because of "ultra pasteurization" but bread has chemical additives. Remember when the loaf lasted 3 days on the shelf?

We live in a preservative world.
That's why we longer than people long ago...All the preservatives. ;))

I'm sure some do harm to us in the long run.

Clearly something about modern life is causing GERD, but it's not clear exactly what it is. As countries "modernize", it seems that an increase in GERD soon follows.

Sometimes I think it may be due to the rise in the consumption of meat. I don't think it's really natural to eat meat on a daily basis, and historically it was more of a treat that people ate only occasionally. Most people eat a lot more sweets and salt now too since everything is loaded with high fructose corn syrup and salt to make bad food taste good.

Another thing I wonder about is the proliferation of pesticides in the food chain. As we spray this stuff on all our produce, it slowly makes it's way into our bodies in small quantities. We're not that different from the insects we are trying to kill, so if it's bad for the bugs, it's probably bad for us too.

Hi Speden that's so interesting that you mention the meat consumption. I was just talking to my hubby about this the other day. Isn't it interesting to look at the way Aisian countries eat meat compared to us! They always have a lot more veges and a small scattering of meat whereas our meat is the star on the plate. I believe (not absoutely sure of my facts here) that GERD is uncommon in those cultures.

Since I had my gallbladder out I have been careful about my fat and sugar consumption and I'm actually starting to feel a lot better not so tired and grumpy.

Yes I totally agree about the pesticides thing. I live in New Zealand and we don't have any apartment living in my part of the country so most people have enough space to have a vege garden. Veges straight from your own garden definately taste better!!! Ive been trying really hard to make everything from scratch these days. No more jars and packets in my cupboard.
