Hi HealingIAm I have been trying to go the natural way as I really don't want to go on PPI's ever again. Here's what has really worked for me.
1. Drinking 2 capfuls of cider vinegar in a glass of water with my meals or whenever the feeling of indigestion starts rising.
2. Taking digestive enzymes with each meal.
3. Drinking 20ml of aloe vera juice first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
4. Eating smaller meals and stopping as soon as I feel full.
5. Cutting sugar and carbohydrate consumption down.
6. Eating 1 teaspoon of New Zealand Manuka honey in between meals.
7. Eating a small handful of almonds (Raw NOT roasted) as snacks twice a day.
8. Taking digest aid 15 mins before meals. This prepares your stomach to accept food.
9. Cutting out highly processed foods and making most meals from scratch.
10. Taking probiotics to repopulate my good gut bacteria and elimante toxins.
All of this I have done with the guidance of a naturopath and it has taken time to get to where I am now. All of the things I've listed above are just part of my normal routine now and second nature but it was hard at the beginning.
For me PERSONALLY I feel a lot of the reflux problems now days are that we eat too many highly processed and highly chemically made food which is depleting our bodies of natural enzymes and compromising our digestive systems. I also PERSONALLY believe that we have all forgotten that we actually need acid to digest our food and that supressing it with PPI's is barking up the wrong tree. Although I do understand that acid does need to be suppressed when the esophagus is damaged and needs time to heal.
The Cider vinegar and the Digest Aid that I take are both designed to add acid to my stomach thereby food is digested properly and doesn't sit around fermenting then get refluxed up.
Again I stress this is my personal view and I do not wish to critcise anyone's choice to use PPI's. Like the rest of us here I wish this horrible condition was a thing of the past and something that none of us ever had to worry about it again. God bless us all.

I am very interested in Natural remedies. Thanks for the list. How long did it take before you notice a difference in your GERD?
I was just Dx with acid reflux disease, but they did not call it GERD. Total shock. I went in to Dr. because I kept getting a food stuck sensation in my middle chest. I have been taking 1 Tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar in water 2x a day, both times is just before I go to bed. When I take it I get so tired so fast that if I try to stay up more than about 20 min I get cranky like a 2 yr old.
I had read that it might help with fatigue. Many other issues I have have been improved since starting it. BTW I was only taking it for about 2 or 3 weeks before my Dr appt., but long after I was having symptoms.
My Drs group is not at all versed in natural remedies and my personal Dr told me absolutely that natural remedies will NOT work for anything. I try not to see her anymore.
Last time I went to see her, she actually said to me, " I don't want you experimenting on yourself with that stuff, but I have a few different things that I want you to try, to see what works."!!!
Another set of questions;
Did you notice that you are hungry more often? nearly desparate to eat, not a lot, but something very very soon? I have always been very willing to wait for a long time after getting up before eating and this is new.
What is the Aloe Vera juice for specifically?
And is Digest Aid the name of the product you are using?
Thanks for any help you can toss my way

Good multivitamin with calcium and magnesium to take with a meal. Its important that your body get the vitamins and minerals it needs to maintain its best function. You can also take L-Glutamine(important amino acid).
As for the rest you just have to try it everyone reacts differently. Hope you feel better. =)

Apple Cider Vinager seems to calm everything down for me I have really bad gerd and am currently taking Zegerid and Prilosec (one in the am and the other in the pm) These help a little bit if I watch my diet. When it gets really unbearable I take a shot of Apple cider vinager and get almost instant relief.GERD not gone completely, but makes it tolerable. I should mention that Organic Apple Cider vinager is what you need to use. Braggs makes the best one, but there are several others out there. This does not include Heinz or anything that is not organic. It has become so popular recently that they sell Braggs at Kroger. Its about 5 bucks for a big bottle. I use about 6 ounces of water mixed in it. My husband does it by the shot. I should add that ACV cured my husband of horrible heartburn and he only needs a shot every couple of weeks for maintenance. Good Luck to all.

Hi MerilynRB sorry I've taken a while to answer this. My case is a little complicated because what I thought was reflux actually turned out to be gallstones. I ended up being rushed to hospital with acute pancreatitis and then had my gallbladder removed. I started taking all my natural remedies before they finally realised what was going on and then after reading lots of information about digestion decided to continue with it all to ensure everything kept working properly. Doctors are quite unbelieveable when they pooh pooh natural remedies. Their remedies and diagnoses were completely useless and wrong for me and they still act like they know everything. Google good digestion and read up on some of the interesting information our modern diets are doing to our digestive health. It's a good read.
Now to answer your questions: No I don't notice that I get any more hungry than usual but I do focus on how my tummy is feeling a lot out of fear for getting more attacks I guess which makes me nervous about every little twinge or feeling.
The aloe vera juice is a very soothing and healing tonic that helps your stomach and intestines to be in tip top shape in terms of enzymes, friendly bacteria and aids in good digestion.
The Digest Aid is a medi herbs brand but any pepsin and HCL tablets from your health store will do the job.
Garlic pearls are also great since garlic is very good for eliminating toxins from your intestines but sometimes reflux sufferers can't tolerate garlic and eating it raw does make you a little socially unacceptable.
