Hi all!

I am a new member and posted under the thread about the Bravo test.

Is it normal to still have GERD and acid reflux while taking PPI's? Like i know ketcup and tomato sauces ans spicy foods trigger my acid reflux and burning in my throat and make my heart feel like it is going to explode. Are you supposed to still feel like that when you eat those foods while taking PPI's?

I had to stop taking my Protonix for the past week because i have the Bravo test scheduled for Friday. I had ketchup tonight and it triggered all of my symptoms but did the same thing while i was taking Protonix. I think the Protonix has helped somewhat because i used to have burning in my throat ALL the time no matter what.

Still wondering too if i should have the Bravo test or postpone it. I have been treated for GERD since December 2009.

Thanks wink

Hi Pinch weasel (love your screen name :-) )
I had that problem with PPI's too. My reflux actually turned out to be caused by gallstone attacks so that's why PPI's weren't working for me. GERD is such a pain!!! Maybe your doctor could try you on another type of PPI to see if that makes any difference.

Hi Moo'sMum (great screen name too!),

I am glad that they found the source of your problems. I hope you are feeling better. My mom had her gallbladder out because of gallstones and gallbladder attacks. That was actually what I thought my problem was too but then they did a CT scan of my chest and abdomen and said everything was fine just a hiatal hernia. I have tried every PPI: aciphex, kapidex, nexium, prevacid, prilosec and even the H2 blockers: zantac etc. The only PPI that has had somewhat of a benefit is Protonix. But even on that I still have burning pain. That is why my GI wants to do the Bravo test. To see if I have bile reflux, non acid reflux, or to determine how bad my acid reflux is. My question is: Have I given this enough time? I have been treated since Dec 09 and am feeling some relief from Protonix. I am scared about the Bravo test and feeling the capsule. I read horror stories. Do I just go ahead with it or wait a little longer and see how the Protonix works?

Thanks wink

Hello and welcome :-)

I am on a PPI and I will have some breakthrough sx if I eat something I know does not agree with me well.  I used to have severe heartburn and have had good luck on the PPIs.

Again a warm welcome.

I live in New Zealand and we don't do the same kinds of test for GERD as in other parts of the world so I think yes definately go for the tests and see if you can get to the bottom of this. Kitt brings up a good point too if you can avoid trigger foods it definately helps make life easier. Keeping a food diary helps with this.
There are lots of other people on here who will give you great advice on all the tests.
