Last Tuesday I had the 24 hour Ph probe test and manometry test done.  I have not heard the results of the test yet. I had a normal endoscopy about six months ago.   I cough during and after I eat, burp for hours after eating with sour taste, and when I lay down at night the sour taste comes into my mouth, sometimes so much I run to spit it out.  I can be asleep and wake up with a mouth full.  To give you an idea of how bad it is, it is 12:50 in the morning, and I am so uncomfortable, and it is so frequent I cannot stay in bed.  I am so tired of this night after night.  Does any of this sound familar?  My doctor was rather abrupt in telling me that my endoscope was normal, so it is doubtful it is reflux.  That is why I had the 24 hour Ph probe done.  I do not know what is considered "normal range" for the Ph, but during the Ph test, when I would experience pain, it would drop to 2-4, and when I had the sour taste in my mouth it would drop to 0.2 to 1.0.  Any information or suggestions that you can give are appreciated.  These 4-6 hours of sleep, and 9 hour work days are getting the best of me.  Thank you in advance.

Hi Datamanager!

Sorry you are having such discomfort!  What you're describing sounds like bile, which is normally associated with acid reflux/GERD.  I've never had the tests you're talking about, only a scope.  I was at one point having severe bile non-stop, to the point where I couldn't even lie down.  Ask your Dr. about prescriptions to help diminish the bile.  I was on one that really helped, although unfortunately, I cannot remember the exact name.  But that one my GP prescribed, so I'm sure a GI or GE would know right off the bat different medicines that would help.

Hope you feel better soon! :) Keep us posted!

I called my doctor's office today, they do not have the results of my tests yet, but they did call in some prescriptions for me to try.  The nurse that returned my call also gave me some helpful information, i.e. no foods after 7:00, no peppermint, no caffine, etc.  I just hope I have a better night today.  My throat feels like it has been burnt with something.  Thank you for your post.

I'm glad the nurse was able to offer some helpful advice!  Have you also tried raising the head of your bed & adding a few pillows to prop your head up with?  Doing so is supposed to keep the acid/bile from rising up in your throat.  Also, not sure how you feel about hot decaf tea, but it might help soothe your throat.

Hope your night is better & the rx's help!  Keep us posted!! :)

The nurse called today regarding the results of the 24 hour Ph probe and the manometry test I had done last week.  She said that my Dr. wants to refer me to a surgeon because of the test results.  That's all that I know at this point.  Just enough to be worried.

Gosh darn VAGUE doctors!!!  I'd call the office tomorrow and ask point-blank what the results were, and why he wants to refer you for surgery.  You have a right to know, and be well-educated on what's going on.   Good luck!!
