I am 32 years old.  I have been taking 40mg of Nexium for 8 years.  I started taking it when I was pregnant with my first baby because of unberable hearburn.  Now that I look back I think I always had digestion issues.  I threw up (not spit up) when I was a baby...My mom eventually put me on goat's milk but nothing helped.  She said I alway smelled bad.  She would give me a bath and I would spit up right after.  haha  I now have three girls and everyone of my babies spit up really bad.  My first child was the worst and I think she has the same constitution I have.

Anyway, July 2010 I had natural hormones implanted just under the skin because I have suffered with depression and anxiety all my life and always felt it was because of hormones.  The past comple of years my PMS has gotten so much worse, very moody, exhausted by noon every day, not being able to sleep very well.  I was also diagnosed with hashimotos thyroid disease.  For those reasons I did the pellets.  A couple of months after the pellets were implanted and taking Naturethroid for the hacshimotos disease...I was noticing I was have unbearable heatburn all the time.  The nexium had always kept my GERD symptom at bay so I was wondering what was going on!  I racked my brain and finally realized the only thing I had changed in my life was the hormone implants (small dose of estrogen and testostrone).  So, I called the Dr. that did the implants and asked if they might be related and he said no way.  I don't think he has a clue!  It's just my theory of course, but I am pretty convinced the hormones might have triggered this strong reaction.  The nexium doesn't even seem to work any more!  I have lost my voice, have burning at the back of my throat and have lost 8 pounds (because I have had to cut so many things out of my diet and I don't want to eat because it hurts).  :(  I had an enoscopy done the end of September and it showed a small hiatal hernia and benign pollyps.  After the test about 30 mins. I had a fever and then that night threw up and the other end.  My cough developed into bronchitis.  I was miserable!  I just had an upper GI test done on 10/22/10 and the Dr that did the test said I have bad acid reflux (I thought....I know!)  I live in a small town and I don't know a GI Specialist....my primary Dr referred me to a surgeon because I tried different medicines (Zantac was what I was taking when I lost my voice b/c the acid was burning my throat) I tried dexilant too....no relief.  My Dr said the only choice I then have is surgery (hence the referral to the surgeon).  :(  I have been researching for 3 days online what to do.  I am miserable enough to get the surgery but would rather find a natural way to help myself.  I just want to feel better and be happy!!!!

This is not my only health issue either....I have symphysis pubis dysfunction (this cause constant pain in my hips and pubic area), which is usually only in pregnant women but mine didn't heal.  It's very painful!!!  My baby is now 2 and half and the Dr.'s don't give me any hope that it will go away because it usually heals within 2 months of giving birth.  I had x-rays done which show a small peice of bone broke off.  I know that was during the birth of my third child because I was in so much pain.  I say that and the dr looks at me like I am crazy.  :(

I am open to advise especially of people that can relate and has a solution!!!  :)

Well I can give you advice on the Gerd and thyroid problem, I suffer from both.

Your gerd sounds severe and you need some more aggressive tests.
You need several tests to see how severe the gerd is: Barium Swallow, Manometry, and Ph testing. From there you and your doctor can decide what's best for you.

I take synthoid for hypothyroidism. We can talk about that in the thyroid forum.

Hi Couchtater...Thanks for responding.  I think the Barium swallow and upper GI are the same thing.  I did one last Friday...The Dr performing it said I had a significant amount of acid reflux.  My Dr that ordered the test still needs to look at the results of the test. I was thinking of doing the surgery but now I'm not so sure.  I want to try some other methods...Maybe nathropath before a surgery.  I don't know.  Wish I did!!!  :(

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  I am sorry to hear of you many issues.

An UGI test usually refers to the endoscopy which you said you had done.

A barium swallow is a test that may be used to determine the cause of painful swallowing, difficulty with swallowing, abdominal pain, bloodstained vomit, or unexplained weight loss.

Barium sulfate is a metallic compound that shows up on x-ray and is used to help see abnormalities in the esophagus and stomach. When taking the test, you drink a preparation containing this solution. The x-rays track its path through your digestive system.

I would advice you to consider finding a Gastroenterolgist to help you deal with the heartburn and the throat problems.  Gather up all the info and don't be afraid to get a second opinion if you do not feel comfortable with a Dr. who looks a you  like you are  crazy.

Take care and stick with us,

Kitt

Thank you Kitt! I am thinking about trying to find another Dr. Do you or anyone one know of a good Gastroenterolgist in Eastern Arizona?

I keep losing weight and have constant symptoms. I am not use to dealing with all these symptoms of GERD and I am overwelmed. The PPI's have worked for 8 years and now all of the sudden they don't work. :( It doesn't seem to matter what I eat, I still have burning in my stomach and throat.

You can go to the American Gastroenterologists (sp) Society website and look up the surgeons listed for your state.

Good advice from Joy.

You have 2 Mayo clinic sites in AZ.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and liver. They  are one of the largest gastroenterology specialty groups in this  region.

Mayo Clinic is located at East Shea Boulevard and 134th Street in northeast Scottsdale, Arizona. Mayo Clinic Hospital and the Mayo Clinic Specialty Building are on 56th Street and Mayo Boulevard (north of Bell Road) in northeast Phoenix, conveniently located near the Pima freeway (Loop 101).

Being from MN I have a tendency to recommend Mayo ~ I have no relationship with this clinic. I wish you the very best.

Kindly,

Kitt

You are way too young to have to deal with this issue for so many years . Please look for a solution to you r problems.. Joy and Kitt gave 1st rate advice.. if you are not comfortable with one answer please get a second opinion.. no one deserves to be miserable for 1 day longer than necessary..

I had a large hiatal hernia and GERD.. I had the Nissen Fundoplication almost 6 months ago, I have never felt better.. the surgery may not be for everyone.. you have to find out what is best for you... I too hope your insurance pays for it...
