To give a little background - I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last November at the age of 44.  I have had surgery and radiation and currently get checked every three months for this.  So far I am doing ok, but it has been an emotional rollercoaster ride for me the past year and I am sure one would consider me "stressed".

For the past few weeks, I have had a lumpy feeling when I swallow.  It does not happen all the time and I have few other symptoms.  I had a Barium Swallow which showed I have severe acid reflux, but everything else looked normal.  The Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor prescribed Nexium and I am going to see my gastroenterologist in the next few weeks.

Since I am in ultraparanoid mode having PC, I am wondering if someone can tell me:

1)  How good of a test is the Barium Swallow for identifing cancer?

2)  Is this lumpy feeling a symptom of acid reflux?

Thanks for any information that you could share.

Good Morning,

I understand your fears completely as my husband also had Prostate Cancer so there is always that "what if" fear that pops up when something does not feel right physically.

I am not sure if you are wondering about throat cancer but if you are perhaps and endoscopy is called for?

The feeling of the lump in the throat is known as globus sensation.  The most common causes are GERD,  stress, and abnormal upper esophageal sphincter function.  So yes, this lumpy feeling can be a sx of GERD but I would like to suggest you see a gastroenterologist for further studies.

I know you will be hearing from other members so stick with us and know we care.

My Thoughts are with you Jerry.

Although I do not have some of your problems, I do have reflux and the lump feeling I had an endoscopy they found esophagitis and stomach fine. It feels like a lump just below voice box area and I swallow alot of phlegm. I do think stress plays a part and being more stressfull makes things worse. The meds I think can make things worse, with side effects ect. If the meds stop acid production then the body tries to fight this by making more acid?

So a short answer is yes the lumpy feeling may just be that and nothing else.

Thanks for your responses...

I'm not a big fan of meds, but will take them if need be. Currently just taking Fish Oil supplement, Vit D for PC (try to get most of my vitamins through fruits/veggies/etc.. Just recently started taking one Nexium/daily. (I'm curious if the fish oil that I started taking a few months ago has any bearing on the Acid Reflux.)

Frankly, I normally have no symptoms other than the occassional lumpy feeling in my throat.
