I didn't know chewing gum was on the no no list...I've heard that it can be good to aid digestion because it helps the build up of salivia which can also help neutralise the stomach acid.
I'm having a bad acid spell at the moment. I just try drinking plenty of water, and chewing gum, and just eat alkaline type foods for a while. It probably helps to have something on your stomach. Even if you feel really sick from the acid, having an empty stomach doesn't really help at all.
