i had the procedure done on 12/20/2010. I was on a liquid diet for three weeks after surgery. i just started eating soft foods, and have been have horrible chest pain. hard to breath and i feel like someone is sitting on my chest. i am drinking tons of water so i don't think anything is stuck. i just want to know has anyone else had severe chest pain after surgery?

Switch back to pureed foods or liquids. You're still healing and the wrong foods can cause pains.
Didn't your doctor give you a list of foods to eat and the time frame to move up?

Weeks 1-4 you're very swollen still and you need to be on liquids and pureed foods (think baby's first food).
Weeks 5-8 soft foods (no mashed potatoes, rice, bread, or meat.)
Weeks 9-12 firmer foods but still staying away from potatoes, rice, bread, or steak

Make sure to chew foods to a liquid and eat very slowly. Keep your food to no more than 1/2 cup a meal.

see my doctor moved me to soft foods on monday (mashed potatoes, tuna, pasta, noodles, eggs). i did get a sheet but it said to start soft foods on the third week. so your saying i should switch back to liquids? i see my doctor tomorrow for my first post op appointment tomorrow.

Mash potatoes and rice get stuck at the site.
If you're having pains it means your stomach is not ready to move on to firmer foods. Switch back and see if you don't feel better.
You can eat baked fish, vienna sausages (chew well), and finely ground beef (small pieces) around 6th week but you must sample first to make sure your stomach is ready.
My first meats was vienna sausages. I took very small nibbles and chewed very well.
I made sure my eating followed a baby's eating pattern.
*liquids
*pureed
*soft
* firmer
* regular

yep, but I have a thyroid condition and am limited in my exercise program because of arthritis problems. So weight loss is hard for me.

I'm at the one year mark and I'm feeling fine. No problems except I can't eat peanuts or peanut butter. It makes me burn now. Go figure?

My post-op was by phone call. I had traveled across the state to have mine. There was a few questions and that was that.

kagdwg09-

I just had the TIF done on 12/29/10, only nine days after you. I was wondering am i the only one who is a little confused about this diet? I thought it was full liquids for the first two weeks, and then week 3-8 is soft foods. After week 8 it says in the brochure you can add in meats, breads, raw fruits and veggies, alcohol, basically allowing a normal food diet again. But then i heard from other people that they started eating normally at week six, and i've also heard from other boards that some people dont get off a soft food diet until week 12? i was just wondering if maybe you knew ....

It's nice to be able to talk to someone who just had this procedure done as well! I was also wondering about working out, my surgeon said i could again this wednesday, exactly two weeks after surgery.

Samstar- my eating guide says the same thing as yours! I'm totally confused! I know that doing another week of liquids is going to kill me! You can only eat so much pudding and soup lol! I started working out wednesday night. Minor stuff like walking on the treadmill. But don't over due bc u will be in pain the next day! I was curious have you experienced any chest pain? Mine just started tuesday. I have an appointment with my surgeon today so I will get back on an update u on what he says!

yes, it's really confusing. I guess after two weeks I will try and add very soft foods into my diet and see how well I can handle them. Oh, I know, I am so sick of yogurt and ice cream (giving me brain freezes all the time), and cream of wheat as well. Yeah, I am going to try not to overdue it but it's hard for me because going to the gym is a huge part of my life, I usually go 4-6 times a week. I have not had that much chest pain, but sometimes after I eat or when laying down my upper stomach area feels like this sort of pressure pain on it, but my surgeon said that was normal. I had to see him one week after surgery because I go back to school (college) this sunday. Ok, I will be here waiting to hear from you!

My sheet of paper given at go home time, said "Eat as tolerated". Noone said liquids or anything. I am in week 9 and still having problems. Wish I would have been told what to eat and when!!!!

hey everyone i just got back from my first post op appointment. Doc said that the chest pain was normal, but to be on the safe side i have to have an EGD done next Thursday to check for an ulcers. Doc told me to stick to soft foods for the next 4 weeks and then we will go ahead and try more solid foods! i am happy how the appointment went just wish this stupid chest pain would go away! He also told me that i could start taking ib pills instead of liquid( thank god children liquid ib is NASTY!!!). so hopefully this pain subsides because i don't like it!

liquid suggestions:
yogurt, jello, muscle milk, boost, ensure, slimfast, soups, broths, popsicles, ice cream, custards

Soft foods:
watery Grits, vienna sausages, scrambled eggs (with milk or water adds to make extra soft), baked fish, crackers (chew well), ground beef (but small pieces)

The main thing is keep the serving size 1/2 cup to 2/3 cup big.
