I'm off the dexilant because it made me nauseous beyond belief. My ENT said I could switch over to omeprazole, and I have. He said it's not as strong as the dexilant, so I might be better off taking it 2x a day...once in the morning and once at night. But upon reading the box, it says once a day. Is it ok to take 2x a day? I'm noticing more tightness in my chest/throat, esp at night, since coming off the dexilant. I dont get the "burn" but do get the tightness.

Thanks for your help!

If your ENT said to take two, then by all means do it, especially if you get worse symptoms at night. I've tried all the meds available and have taken two of each except dexilant because it's dual release.

Hon, there is a site, drugs dot com, where you can look up all side effects, allergic reactions, when to contact a doctor, etc. I strongly urge you to look at the information because frankly with my medical training or my health, I would not be caught dead taking a medication that haves me with tightness in the chest. I'd be calling the doctor and stopping the medication. However, you never know what are the side effects of medications, so its better to be an informed patient than an uninformed one.

IE: My thyroid medication I just started within an hour I was having "flu" symptoms, hives, and a migraine. I stopped medication and took some allergy medication (to rid the hives) and took some other otc stuff to alieve the other symptoms. I ringed the doctor alerting them of the allergic reaction and they are looking into another one that will be milder.

First, tell your doctor what you're experiencing since going off Dexilant.

YES, it's perfectly safe to take 20mg Prilosec (omeprazole) 2 times a day, especially since you've already run it by your doctor. I'd take one when you get up and one about 7 to 8 hours later. Always take it on an empty stomach and at least one hour before you eat. Give it time to kick in before you put food in your stomach. You said you "read the box". Are you taking Prilosec over the counter? If so, I would say taking two a day makes perfect sense. Over the counter medications are rarely as strong as the prescription form is. Unfortunately insurance companies will argue that but then we all know how they hate paying out when they're getting so much coming in. Can you tell I've had to go a few rounds with insurance companies in my lifetime???

I've had GERD for over 20 years, among other things, and I've tried every proton pump inhibitor (PPI) on the market and Nexium 40mg 2xday is the only one that works for me. We all get the joy of try this and try that before we finally strike it rich with the right medication!

If I didn't have humor to help fight the disease, I'd spend the rest of my life in tears.
