I just spent about 36 hours in an ER which ended up with a endoscopy showing I have two strictures and a very inflamed esophagus. I had been having spasms over the past few months but they only lasted a few minutes and eventually eased up. But while hosting a dinner with some stress-inducing associates I started having such horrific spasms that even saliva would not stay down. Of course I was in a panic and my husband drove me to the local ER where they tried a variety of things before calling in a GI after midnight. I was sedated and never did get to talk to the dr but he did inform my husband and daughter that the two strictures needed to be dilated with a balloon? What exactly does that mean? I was put on orapramazole(sp) 2x a day for two weeks until I come in for appt. I was discharged before this Dr was back again so I am worried and scared of this procedure. This is all new stuff to me and I don't know anyone who has went through this. However, the scary part is that I've read there is a high incidence of perforations?? Is this true? The dr told them my throat is narrow and they had to use a "glidescope" and they were given a card with info saying they had trouble scoping me. If I get scoped again I am supposed to let them know I need this type of scope tool. My throat is still hoarse/sore three days later. Is this normal? Also I was wondering about this "soft diet" which was really not explained too much. I ate EVERYTHING before and now I am only on soup and mashed potatoes and soft cereals. I need to find out more about this diet. My regular Dr discharged me and although I've never had issues with him before, he really was not very informative. Thanks for any feedback I can get to help relieve this anxiety.

Did they already do the dilation? My GI did that during my endoscopy. It was a huge relief to be able to swallow again. The soft diet sounds like something you only need do until the soreness goes away. Have you called the DR with these questions?

I'd find a good GI and have a full check up. If you have strictures it could be something that will be chronic and you'll need the procedure repeated ever so often.
Suggested soft foods: soupy oatmeal, jello, vienna sausages, protein drinks, soupy grits, and scrambled eggs.
