Hi Baza,
Welcome to Healing Well! I can only say that I've been on PPI's for many years, and have had annual blood work with my physical with no mention of low platelets.

It's an interesting point, though. I know that it can be a side effect of PPI's but it does probably affect people differently. I've read that platelets can be suppressed to a certain degree without causing problems.

I will definitely ask my doc about my platelet levels next time I see him. It must be they weren't terrible, or he would have expressed concern. Still, you've piqued my interest. I'm also interested in my B12 levels.

I found some information about levels at this website:

www.lowplatelets.com/what-does-your-platelet-count-mean.html

It is true that all medication has a risk/benefit ratio--you have to weigh the benefits, and your need for the medication. It would be great not to need any meds, wouldn't it?

Hope things straighten around for you soon.
Take care,
Denise

Hi dencha, thanks for your response,i see your interested in b12 levels, last summer i suffered from Folate and B12 levels being low, started off with weakness in my legs then breathless at mild exertion, numbness in hands and feet and nausea.GI took me off ppis because i feel ill on them and tried me on Ranitadine 900mg a high dose, within 3 months i had all the deficiency problems, stopped ranitadine and levels went back to normal.Still got pins aand needles though, waiting to see neurologist.

Hi Baza,
What type of GERD symptoms do you have? If they're typical regurgitation of food and acid, with wide open LES, you would probably be a great candidate for a Nissen Fundoplication surgery. It's not as clearcut a decision with people who have atypical symptoms, or those whose symptoms are controlled with medication. Since you can't take medication, your choices are limited.

Have you had the tests required to make that decision? Those would be an endoscopy, manometry, 24hr PH monitor, and a barium swallow. Some also do a stomach emptying, just to check if that may play into the problem.

If you have reactions to the acid-reducing medications as severe as the ones you're describing, you certainly can't go the medication route.

Have you had these conversations with your GI doctor?
Take care,
Denise

Sorry got cut off. Im due to see the gastro again and wondered if I will have to have the Nissen fund. What do you think? I have bloating and indigestion and have previously suffered chet pain severely due to acid causing spasms in my oesophagus. Ive had hospital treatment for this and when I was getting pain and vomiting. I had my gallbladder out just over a year ago and cant get my stomach right yet. Its difficult to eat certain foods and I really get relief. I have had blood tests quite frequently and been anemic otherwise my blood has been ok. I did have some hormone problems prolactin being high but its ok now. Ive had some infections though on the chest and urinary infections. I know there are some side effects to PPIs tiredness etc. Anyone else had these symptoms especially after gallbladder removal?

Hi dencha, thanks very much for input, yes i had had all the tests apart from gastric emtying test,i was diagnosed as having a lax les,on my first endoscopy i had severe esophagitis,i thought i was going to die i was that ill,but i responded to 80mg nexium and ranitadine 300mg and healed, ive never been well on the meds though, tried them all and theres always problems. Gi says im a candidate for surgery,GP doesnt agree.Im waiting to see a surgeon ,hope he can help and will do it because i have Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy aswell, which might put him off.

Hi Baza,
An excellent surgeon will not touch you unless you're a good candidate. I would think he/she might want to do some testing of his/her own.

You certainly can't go on the way you are, and if meds aren't something you can take, it seems to be a good reason to strongly consider surgery.

I hope you get answers soon!
