I was diagnosed with Achalasia by my last Doctor a year ago but the new one agreed with the first three and said it is DES.  Unfortunately, this is the first doctor who has actually mentioned anything other than Achalasia to me.  With a confirmed diagnosis after searching for 3 years I have finally started treatment, well at least picked up the perscription.  Having a name for my pain and regurgitation has helped me to find these postings and look for alternative therapies.  I was perscrbed Procardia (Nifedipine) 10mg POtid.  I do not feel comfortable taking this drug without trying other things first.  I had a very severe allergic reaction to Reglan a while back and now fear any kind of drug.  Has anyone taken Procardia?  What else would help other than pepermint oil, which I have not yet tried.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thank you.

I took Procardia for blood pressure for about 2 1/2 years. I had 3 increasingly higher doses. There are many side effects and you can search on-line for those. The main thing is not to suddenly stop taking it. I can attest to feeling like total crap for 3-4 weeks after quitting it cold turkey. My side effects included ringing in the ears, which started 2 days after I began the med. I also had swollen ankles, low sex drive :( and constant palpitations. Since I also had GERD, it was hard to tell if others were from Procardia or not. As with any med, you must evaluate risk vs. benefit.
