My name is Ty and I am 22. I have had GERD since the 5th grade. I just thought I would share my story in case it helps anybody out. I read some of the posts here before my surgery and they really helped me so I thought I could return the favor. (I have a question at the end of this post if you want to skip my story, I could really use some advice)

I had the TIF procedure with a laparoscopic assist (to fix a large hiatal hernia) done 11 days ago. So far everyday is better than the last. I was not happy to wake up from the procedure and be told I can't have any painkillers due to the high likelyhood they would make me sick. The only thing I was offered was a Tylenol suppository, which seems nasty but after a few hours of post-op pain I set my dignity aside and spread those cheeks haha. I stuck it out and now don't have much pain at all except when standing up because it stretches everything out. The liquid diet is pretty beast but luckily I haven't felt hungry once since surgery.

At first I still had some pretty bad reflux. It hurt very badly whenever something would leave my stomach to go into my esophagus, but my doctor said that was normal because of the swelling. I still have a little reflux but it is much much better. I will be stopping my PPI in 4 days so heres hoping I can handle it.

I was able to go to class (at college) 5 days after surgery and started my job after 7 days. My job is very physical and quite often requires me to lift heavy objects and sweep, both of which are against the post-op rules. I am having a very hard time following the no lifting over 10 pounds rule even in my everyday life. I have lifted/carried some heavier stuff and nothing has happened yet, I haven't even felt anything strain. Has anybody had anything bad happen from lifting too much or know if something bad may be going on that I just can't feel? I would think I could feel a stitch break or something. I know I shouldn't be lifting but its just so hard at work not to. Any advice?

Hope this helps somebody.

Hi donewithgerd,
I'm glad you found this forum helpful before you surgery (as I did), and am happy you decided to share your experience post surgery. It sounds as if things are going very well, and I'm glad for you!

Please don't do anything to undo the good that has been done for your health and well-being. Follow the lifting rule, and don't try to be a hero. If your job requires lifting, please talk with your supervisor and discuss your post-surgery requirements. You would feel terrible if you did something to damage your hernia repair. A six week wait before lifting heavy objects is pretty standard. Whatever your doctor suggested is exactly what you should be doing.

I'm sure others will follow with similar advice.
Again, thanks for sharing your experience! I'm sure it will help someone else.
Best wishes for continued healing,
