After tying Zegrid, Nexium, Dexilant, and Prevacid, my GI wants me to try Aciphex. The prevacid, with 300 mg twice daily of ZANTAC was not stopping a good bit of symptoms. So.....trying to stay hopeful that a med will work for me. Can't help but get a little nervous. Is 20 mg of Aciphex twice a day stronger than 30 mg of prevacid twice a day? The Prevacid gave me some relief, but it seems to only last about 8 hours. Seem like I could take it 3 times a day. It is used for some people in stronger doses. GI doc actually brought up the surgery option today. shocked That caught me off guard. My PCP mentioned just shutting the stomach down (gastrostomy???) so it could heal. I don't read about that anywhere being done for GERD/Gastritis.

So anyway, just wanted to update and get some thoughts on these new possibilities.

Hanging in there. Thanks for listening.

Well, I've enjoyed my Nissen. The recovery is a little tricky with the restrictions and all, but it's very do-able.

I am sorry but I cannot help you with the med question.  This is a good question for your pharmacist.  Let us know the answer re the meds when you find out.

Well, I found out from the dose of Aciphex last night that it too only last about 8 hours. So when I woke up at 1:30 am I was getting gurgling in the back of my throat as usual. sad Making matters worse the doc doesn't want me on Carafate. sad sad I asked for it last week while he was out of town and the assistant got one of the other docs to prescribe it. I really need it to protect my throat from the flowing acid. I now also have a constant headache. Oh well, I will get through this.

Still hanging in there.

PS.......couple more questions/thoughts.

Will the PPI eventually start to last longer?

From looking over my journal it doesn't look as if the Zantac is doing anything. It's definitely not providing the bridge between doses of PPI's even though I have it spaced so that it should be at it's strongest during that time I need the bridge.

Good news is I have an appetite since last night. So maybe the weight loss can stop. yeah

Thanks again for all the support.

Nexium lasted 12hrs for me. I never took Aciphex so I'm not sure how long it's supposed to last.

Hi Joy,

It should last 24 hours, but the GI hoped it would last 12. Actually I never got complete relief anyway. This afternoon is worse. Not sure it's working at all. I may go back to the Prevacid that at least gave me some relief. I am seeing another GI tomorrow.

And, while I'm concerned about the surgery, I'm also concerned I may not be a good candidate for surgery since my esophagitis is so bad. Trying not to worry too much.

Thanks, Sewfun

The surgery will most likely be the cure of your esophagitis if the cause is from GERD.

Good to know. I was thinking the swelling of my esophagus would have to be gone. Mine is stage IV. I'm in a lot of pain today because of the med change. I would have the surgery tomorrow if I could. I have been reading some of your old posts about your doctor and pretty sure I found him on the net. Will be interesting to see what my GI doc says tomorrow. I have been barely able to eat today. Rough day. Thanks for listening. Again!!!
