Hello All,

This is my first post ever! I hope I can get some relief for some responses

I've been dealing with Acid Reflux since I was 17 and prescribed prevacid, it work an actually went away for sometime but being young and not fully understanding what I was actually dealing with I went back to my normal eating habits which weren't very healthy. I took an x-ray and an endoscopy and discovered that I was extremely backed up (bowel movements) which was causing my discomfort.

Years later about 19-20, I developed pain again but I managed to get a hold of it. Then it came back yet again about 21-22! I went to another doctor and was diagnosed with GERD! My stomach was in pain just lightly touching it hurt so much I was then put on Omeprazole for about 2-3 months twice a day and it was successful. Also following a strict diet I was starting to feel "normal" after sometime. After my doctor retired I went to another doctor and did another endoscopy and it was clear everything was good. I was told to stay on omeprazole for another 2 weeks and I should be fine! So I did as told.

This is where my story gets a little weird. Now at 23 the beginning of this year I was good an occasional flare up here and there but manageable. BUT one night my father made dinner, fish tilapia which he had made on another occasion. The fish I was consuming that night had been re-frozen and then cooked for that night. Almost Immediately after I consumed the fish I felt terrible my stomach was in pain and very uncomfortable. I wasn’t physically sick but I defiantly felt like it.  I was in pain hardly eating and losing un necessary weight. The fish eventually got out of my system and it took about 2 weeks! Ever since then I haven’t been the same. My stomach has been hurting and more recently I’ve been feeling horrible, again not physically sick but feeling as so. I've been getting pain in the middle of my rib cage with an occasional headache.

I went to another doctor and was prescribed prevacid again I was also put on an even strict diet: no meat, no foods cooked in oils, basically I’m eating like a rabbit, veggies, bread, fish, noodles.  I took a blood test, urine test (waiting for the results) and EKG, my EKG was normal. I was also told I have to sleep at a regular time because not getting enough sleep messes up the GI tract (I was surprised to hear but was in agreement because I’m always tired). So now at 23 I have a bedtime!! Which I doing but desperately wishing I could be a "normal" 23 yr old. So this is were I'm at right now I’m trying very hard to eat but it’s difficult when you feel like crap. I know part of the reason I feel like crap is because I’m not eating enough BUT I am eating my 3 meals. I sometimes feel as if I’m going to vomit but never do (I know this too much information but I’m desperate)

What else can I do to fix this or at least get a handle on it???? Any knowledge about my situation would be greatly appreciated!!

P.S. I don’t drink or smoke.

You need to go to a gastroentrologist and give him/her your history and current problems. Tell him/her you want the following testing done:
barium swallow
EGD
Stomach emptying test
pH testing
H. Pyloria
manometry

These will get to the bottom of your problems. Meanwhile you can go on over the counter omeprazole until you see the doctor. Be sure to tell him the results of the medicine.

The hardest one is the manometry. The others are a breeze in my opinion.
Barium swallow- drink barium and be positioned different ways to see if the barium comes back up any. Barium tastes a little like lemon flavored chalk. Yum!
EGD- while your asleep they look down your throat and check out things. No big deal unless you don't like IVs.
Stomach emptying- eat some radioactive food and stand in front of a special camera for about an hour.
ph testing- depends on which method you do. ph wire is in for 24 hrs. the bravo capsule (I did) is inserted during the EGD. It falls off in ten days or less.
H. Pyloria- you breath in a special bag I believe or are tested by endoscopy? Never had it done
Manometry- a small tube is ran down your throat via the nose and you drink water for the pressure readings. It's no walk in the park but it's vital to see if you have swallowing problems.

I hated the PH probe I had a tube stuck up my nose for 24 hours. It was like the manometry only thinner. It made me gag every time I tried to talk so it was annoying not painful. This is the other way to do it. EGD was IV stick ( I hate needles) so that wasn't fun but once the IV drugs get in your gone in 10 seconds or less to happy land. Not too bad overall so don't stress out.

Im fine with the needles and being under anesthesia but test being done while awake! I am not a fan of at all just the thought of it freaks me out !! If theres a way these types of test can be done while under anesthesia I would feel a little better!

The barium swallow is nothing. You drink a barium mix. No pain involve, no invasive procedure.
You can request the bravo capsule to be inserted under sedation.
The only one you don't get sedation is the manometry. It can mess up the mesurements. Plus you have to be alert enough to drink water. You might can talk the doctor to give you a mild sedative to cut the jitters some.
