Hi Friends,

I did the gastric emptying test today and its postive per the doctor - i will be discussing the details with the doctor tomorrow.  My BRAVO already came positive.    I am currently managing the GERD symptoms with ZANTAC and Maalox.

Can u guys give some advice on the gastric emptying problem, if this could be the root cause of GERD.   Is there any cure/medication to fix the gastric emptying problem ?

Many thanks
Raj

They usually treat gastric emptying issues with medication like reglan. It can contribute to gerd, but gerd is really from a weak LES.

Hi Raj,

From what I've read, surgeons don't like to do Nissens on people who have gastric emptying problems. It seems that the surgery can create even worse problems for those people.

It'll be interesting to hear your doctor's take on your test results.
Good luck!

Thanks Denise.   I am hoping that if i can improve my stomach issue, that should also help with GERD.  I am thinking that the longer the food/acid stays in the stomach, the more the chances for acid to come back up.  Not sure if this logic is correct though !

Hi Raj,

Your logic is definitely correct. It makes perfect sense! If you've got a stomach full of food/acid, etc. and it doesn't empty quickly enough, all that you've eaten is sitting there waiting to be refluxed.

I hope you get things straightened around soon.

Talked to my GI over the phone - he mentioned that normal people have 50% food gone in 90 minutes, mine was 17% which is quite low. Need to take domperidone before each meal. I have this medication since i am from india where this is a easily available. Need to watch my diet, smaller and more meals, avoid sugary and fatty food...which is the same recommendation for gerd also. Since my gerd i have lost 15 pounds, and thinking back, it could be because of my poor indigestion due to slow stomach emptying, i would think

Touchwood, since my gerd is under control with zantac and maalox, i am not thinking of surgery right now.

Hi Raj,

I hope that you continue to feel more comfortable, and have found a way to manage without surgery. I believe that the stomach emptying issue is a complication that will make you want to avoid the surgery.

Good luck with finding alternatives that work well for you!
