I am 26yrs old and I am having trouble swallowing. It started a few weeks ago when I was eating a sandwich started to chew and i just could not swallow it. Almost as if I was choking on it. Lost 7lbs in so far because all I am eating is pudding and ice cream. This is the only thing I can actually swallow.

GI Dr did an EGD and biopsy came back as acid reflux. Also went to my ENT since I haven't been eating she scoped my throat and said it is very red. Said must be acid reflux. I am on nexium 2x a day and Zantac.

It is going on 2 weeks of the pills and I still can't swallow food. Anyone have this problem or heard of this??

Thanks
Wayne

Hi Wayne,

I'm not totally sure but I'm going through the same problem. I've had my EGD and biopsy this past Monday and just heard back from GI Doctor he wants to see me next week. I've been on Prevacid 2X a day for about 9 weeks so far and I'm starting to feel better but not 100 percent. From what I've been told, it takes about 8 weeks before you will notice an improvement. I've also cut out all caffein products, no sauce, no fried foods, no spices. Basicly all bland foods.

WaynoIam, I have had acid reflux for quite some time, and have not been able to swallow only on a couple of occasions.  At both times, I think I can attribute it all to stress.

Have you been under a lot of stress lately or in stressful situations?  It can even be subconscious stress, but I think any type of stress or anxiety can play a role in having the esophagus
tighten up to where a person can't swallow.

another thing you can eat is porridge you get to love it because it  has no effect on your acid.... The tablets took me about 6-7 weeks to work I still have an odd day if I eat something stupid like today a licorice and peach candy and wow did I know it .... not eating that again hope the tablets work soon.... yeah

I am a 43 year old female and for the last 5 weeks have not been able to swallow solid foods. I am going to see a GI doctor today. Is there anyone who found it impossible to swallow anything thicker than milk? I am getting so frustrated and would like some moral support. Thanks all.......

I'm having a big problem too, I just had my second visit to my ENT and have a swollen red throat--acid reflux coming up all the way into my throat. My first GI visit is next Tuesday. My stomach feels like a balloon, I've already lost 5 lbs and I've always been small and thin so I look really sick.  Every time I try to eat I choke and feel like something is stuck in my throat. This came on so suddenly--I'm a healthy acitve 60 year old woman and could eat anything without it bothering me. Here's some soft foods you might try to keep some nutrition in your body -- that will go down easy with out making you choke. I sip chamomile herb tea, papaya juice---both of these are very soothing to my throat. I drink Ensure every day, it's expensive but has all the essential vitamins, yogart the kind with the active live cultures and bananas I have no problem swallowing. I munch on cherrios,
I never thought I would see the day I would eat that stuff, to me it has no taste, but if I chew a few at a time it doesn't make me choke and provides some fiber. I can eat mashed potatoe's.  I've noticed a little little improvement in the lump in my throat but my ENT said it's going to take months. We're all in this together, so just know you're not alone and we're here to support each other. Jan

Thank you for the vote of confidence California lady. I went and the doc tells me acid reflux. He has also scheduled a procedure to stretch my esphagus. I have lost 20 lbs as of today, and unfortunately can not even eat soft foods. If liquids are too thick I can't drink it without watering it down. I was told this is becoming quite common. I am living for the day to eat something solid. The doc said that I should be eating again by next week end. Mine also came on suddenly. (while I was eating dinner) and progressed to this point. Good luck next week. I will look forward to checking back on this sight to see how you are doing. GOOD LUCK

Hi, I am 27 years old and am confused! I was eating a sandwich one day and choked while swallowing it. It has been 3 weeks and it has gotten worse! Now I can't swallow any solids. I went to the Doc. and she told me it sounds like DERD? I have never have any other signs? No heart burn at all. I went and bought the meds she told me to buy, Prilosec and Zantac but have not taken them yet. I will go for an X-ray (not sure what it is called) in 2 days. Does anyone have any advice? Has anyone had this happen and not had any other syptoms? Thanks for any info you may have. confused

Glad you had docs check you out, the only person I've that had your symptoms was my Father, he had esophagal cancer! Can't be too careful. I always say,"make sure it's not something bad BEFORE you start to learn to live with it!"

I take Nexium and it took 8 weeks before it worked. Now I'm having trouble with my throat feeling very dry and my mouth feels like I have cotton in it. They suggested that I try Biotene. It's an over the counter liquid moisturizer for dry mouth. It does help, but I want to get rid of the problem. I want to go off the Nexium, not sure what they'll do next. Been on all kinds off medictions that didn't work.

Hang in there Dee, my husband's throat and mouth didn't get better until he'd had the stomach under control for a while, he damaged much of his throat and mouth with the acid stomach. Once he was able to eat vegetables without incident, it got better on it's own.

I am having this problem. I got it after being on Nexium for two weeks. Is the dryness caused by acid reflux or the Nexium? I am being scoped on the 2 Aug 07 but this dryness is rough.

I have the same problem, i have acid reflux for more than 5 years already. I do experience heartburn. Worse, i vomit the foods i just ate, especially in the morning. Before i used to take Losec and it's good, it helped me feel better. But i stopped taking any meds now, i don't want to be dependent on them. I just avoid eating foods that could aggravate it. The thing that i really can't avoid is the STRESS. It contributes a lot!

ses, is your esophagus narrow?  Is that why you have to have your throat stretched??  I am suffering every day with this too!!!  I am wondering if I should have mine stretched...Could you please tell us what the results of your procedure are???

My doctor told me to take Nexium once a day and it's not working, at all!!!!!!!!! It sucks!!  I think that my body does not respond to nexium!!!!!!!!  Plus, she must be wrong in telling me that once a day is enough since I have it real bad!!

indersonou, did your chest hurt badly and did you taste acid in your mouth too while on Nexium?  Unfortunately, I cannot wait 3-4 weeks to see if Nexium works.  Because my insurance doesn't cover it and I only have samples.  I don't have enough.

In order to be able to take it, the doctor has to write a long letter to the insurance company that I've tried all the other drugs and they didn't work.   I cannot go through all of that if it's not working for me now.

indersonu, I know that you had symptoms.  I mean did you have MORE symptoms at first after nexium.  Because my symptoms are WORSE after taking nexium.  The pain in my chest is far more severe while I'm on Nexium, so is the pain in my throat and now I also have an acid taste in my mouth with the nexium.

I do have whole wheat pita.  It is new, maybe that will work later on.

A pharmacist who has reflux told me that after a few days I would know if Nexium works.  I'm not sure if my Gi will give me more samples.

firstone, indersonu said that Nexium ended up helping her.  and i'm sure that there are many people feel that way.  But I am NOT going to continue to take Nexium.  I feel SO, SO terrible today!!! My chest hurst SO MUCH and my throat is closing.  There is no way that I can give Nexium 3-4 weeks more.  It is not worth the risk.  In PH-testing, my results showed that my GERD is terrible.  Therefore, I can damage my esophagus horribly if I don't continue taking meds that work!  Prevacid doesn't seem to work at all!  But at least I'm not in THIS much pain with it!!  Nexium has GOT to go!!
