sometimes I wish there was a way to extract myself from the situation of GERD, etc. I feel like its so easy to avoid an argument by leaving the room, etc., but reflux and URQ pain are the only things I can't remove myself from, I have to take them wherever I go.

After a few good days got hit with severe GERD and once again an inexplicable URQ pain that never shows anything on tests, which I am so afraid of it being pancreatitis or liver or something serious. I eat like a saint and do everything right, I just don't get it. I wish I could remove myself from the situation, if only for a breather.

It's c**p, I agree. I'm still in flare up and it's not fun. We just did a pH test on the folic acid tablets that seemed to spark off this attack - the pH was lower than the measuring stick!!!

I've muddled through lots of flare ups, wondering what I did wrong, and when it goes I wonder what I did right. Most times I don't know. Mine can flare up overnight with no warning. Sometimes I wonder if it's from sleeping on my stomach - occasionally I wake up like that.

All I can suggest for the really bad times, is to do whatever distraction therapy you like best - a good film, a good book, Wii ..... or even extra work!! Whatever you have in your life that helps you stop thinking about it for a while, use it! I know the GERD will still be there, but I always feel a bit better if I can take my mind off it. And sometimes I feel a kind of satisfaction that I managed to do something regardless of the GERD.

Maybe we need an escapism thread where we don't talk about GERD !!!!!!!!

haha, its like a joke - the guy who goes to the dr's office because his finger hurts, and the dr. breaks his arm and says "does your finger hurt anymore". I guess that is a way of putting it in perspective...I could always have some uncurable disease, which would probably take my mind off the GERD quick (I remember how scared I was when being tested for Scleroderma). What I hate is a URQ pain that I have had over a year, which initially was due to medication but now comes and goes regardless. I often get trapped in the pessimistic thoughts that it is a vital organ...

I don't have a better solution than what you said. Since my wife is out of town I guess it'll be a movie for me.

This post really stands out to me because I'm in the same boat on [excrement] creek and my paddles are long gone.

Since being diagnosed (about 3 months ago) I have lost 30lbs, COMPLETELY revamped my eating habits, and started a Nexium regimen - and my GERD has gotten worse, without a doubt. I've just within the last few days started to get throat pain and the feeling that something is stuck in my esophagus. I also have the problem where I can have days when I think it's completely gone, and then BAM! I'll have a horrible flare-up which pretty much makes me feel like I'm back to square one.

Hang in there bud! I agree with distraction therapy, short as it may be. We're all here to hear you when you need it.

@ aeshleyrose. Thanks. And yeah, sounds similar to my case. It is so tough being an atypical case...I wish I could just take a PPI in the morning and forget about it all.

Did you ever try taking a ppi at night? Mine made no impact on night time reflux or morning nausea until I started taking it about 10.00 pm. I know you're supposed to take them before breakfast but that seemed to leave me unprotected as I always felt it had worn off by the time I went to bed. I definitely don't get an even 24 hour cover out of a 30 mg dose of ppi, so I take it at night - fasting is always my worst time, eating relieves some of my symptoms.

@theacidrefluxman Are you a candidate for surgery? I see you joined in 2009... Seems like this has been plaguing you for a while.

i am not a candidate for surgery due to not having barrets and having a dysmotility problem. unfortunately meds cause me a right side pain which precludes me from taking them...
