I have been dealing with heartburn for years. Gas pains and pressure in my chest sometimes as well. Well the last few days it seems to hurt a little when swallowing. Not very painful, just a sore feeling when eating or drinking. It also seems to be accompanied by more small belches and phlegm. There is also some gas pressure in my chest. My question is can my heartburn cause the difficulty swallowing? Does it go away? It's only been 2 days but I am wondering if it's related.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.

Several conditions can cause difficulty swallowing, and this symptom should always be evaluated by a physician. In many cases, though, difficulty swallowing is linked to a condition known as  (GERD), which causes the contents of the stomach to inappropriately leak into the esophagus.

Again, if you have any difficulty swallowing, it is important that you see your physician.

Kindly,

Kitt

Hi Crynosis,
Welcome! My sore throat when I swallow is definitely associated with my GERD. Mine includes coughing and the phlegm you mentioned. The acid burning in my esophagus has taken away my singing ability, and part of my speaking volume.

The discomfort when I swallow seems to be behind my sternum.

That's where your esophagus is located. I sometimes I seem to feel things I swallow going all the way down, especially if it is chunky like raw vegetables or nuts. Now I'm avoiding those things to try to let my esophagus heal. I believe it takes a long time.
