Lately I have been diagnosed with GERD. I have been taking and anti ace medicine for the past 3 weeks. But I can't burp. And if I do I have to get soda in order to burp. Whenever I do, it burns. It is all foamy. Why can't I burp normally? Is it forming somewhat of an acidic wall?

I struggled to burp when my GERD was at its worst; I burped often but also frequently felt I needed a fizzy drink or something to relieve the sensation of needing to burp. It could be that it's just a sensation rather than actual gas? Do you have gastritis - I think you can get a lot of odd sensations from that.

Have you tried peppermint capsules or peppermint tea? Some say peppermint is bad for GERD but I've always found it helpful to suck or chew mints, tho I can't tolerate tea of any description.

If it's just since you started medication that you've got this particular symptom, then perhaps you need a lower dose or a different drug?

GERD treatment is a long process or trial and error - you'll get there!

Hey Vems,

I understand the desire to burp, but I would switch to mineral water if I were you. I used to drink soda and beer in order to burp not knowing it was what made me worse. The foamy-ness could be from the antacids you're taking or from an extreme mucous production from your cells trying to protect your esophagus.

I haven't had a soda for 4 months now - you can do it too! :)

Best wishes,

Hey Vems

Good Morning.  I will admit that I have used soda to get up a nasty ole burp that was stuck..............but generally this is not a big issue for me.  Great input from the other members.
