Aloha from Hawaii guys,

I recently been batting this struggle with GERD/Acid reflux for two months. For the first month I was in the denial stage, then I hit my low in the recent weeks, depression, anxiety, loss of sleep, etc.

My case came all of sudden...no food triggers and started with a mild chest pain. Went through all medications of PPIs and H2s, Tums, gaviscone, everything. Tried all home remedies as well ACV, aloe vera, etc.

I couldn't do Bravo test cause pain was too unbearable during the week off PPIs.

I'm currently on Prevacid 4x a day at 30mg. I know its a lot but doc wants to be sure it is acid reflux and this is a way of finding out without bravo.

At this you age, I really want to do surgery to help me condition. Today is not that bad, but usually, I feel acid coming up to my mouth, burning chest and tongue. And stomach feels a little burning.

Do you thing surgery would be for me? I also am really interested in this new tecnique called the LINX. Waiting for FDA approval though.

For past med history, I've been off an on all PPIs for the month of July and August, only recently been on Prevacid at this high dosage of 4x so doc says to wipe all symptoms and be sure it is acid reflux. He also has me on calcium supplements and polyethene glcol cause its hard to go sometimes.

Any feedback would much be appreciated!

Aloha.

Have you had a motility study, barium swallow xray, Endoscopy, or stomach emptying test?
These can also tell if you've got acid reflux.

i did an endoscopy which should only mild gastritis, but once the GI doc gave me protonix 2x a day 40 mg, it gave me throat tightness so I stopped....then I could feel the acid in the throat....bounded off and on all the meds, and it went down hill from there....but now I'm taking prevacid 4x a day at 30mg as instructed by my GI to ensure its acid reflux....this is brutal...

Glad to have you adding to the forum, Max.

Do you have any idea what caused the sudden onset of your GERD? Did you have an accident with severe chest pressure that resulted in a large hiatal hernia? If you have a hernia the only repair is probably a regular Nissen or one of the variations.

Did you have a barium swallow or another procedure to show where the stomach is and how it reacts to swallowing? I know what you mean by being off antacids for Bravo. I only got through it because they refused to do surgery without it. My pH was 1 or less the whole time - pure acid. I had a large hernia, stomach stuck in my chest causing terrible pain, and they made me jump through all the hoops, get all the measurements, which took 5 months of suffering because it was so hard to get appointments.

They really need to do tests to measure the length of the esophagus and check your swallowing ability. So do your best to cooperate.

Best wishes,
Alcie

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to you on your first visit to Healing Well! I am sorry to hear you have been in so much misery. I hope there is someway you can tolerate being off meds long enough to get your ph study done.

Do keep talking with us and know we are right here to support you.

Kindly,

thanks kitt. This all so new to me as I previously was a healthy fit young guy. Now, I'm trying to cope with this. But I was suppose to do the PH test in August but couldn't handle being off meds. I tried going off an extra week earlier to see if it was acid rebound I was experiencing but now I have to get healed up first....then do a pH test hopefully. I really want to do some type of surgery as I can't see myself taking such high dosages of meds for a long time.

Skitt, how can I have it so a response emails me to this forum. Thanks! I'm so happy there's a community like this....I felt really lost and alone when this all came down on me.

Hey Maximus (most awesome name ever!)

Have you done any of the suggested lifestyle/dietary changes?

Not eating/drinking:
Tomatoes
Chocolate
Spicy food
Alcohol
Coffee or tea
Soda

This list is just a general guideline. Most people find out their triggers through a trial and error process. Also, I highly suggest writing down everything that you eat while also documenting pain/discomfort levels. I discovered a couple of triggers that way.
Also are you avoiding laying down for a minimum of 3 hours after eating?

Being on PPI's has never allowed me to do any of the above.

Let me know and we can go from there :)

Aloha!
Ashley

Have you made any lifestyle changes?

My symptoms never went away completely until I went vegan, and it's only been a little over a week for me so I'm still in the testing phase.

No matter how much medicine I was taking, my symptoms were only ever manageable - not gone.

Even though I take Nexium, I still can't eat pizza or drink coffee. It's not a panacea for all of us, it's just a helper, really.

Lifestyle changes, I believe, are what really makes a difference to those of us suffering from GERD.
