DH had Nissen surgery on 7/14. He's been doing well except for what seems to be hypoglycemia episodes - he's going to make a Dr.'s appointment to confirm this. Dr. Google tells me that hypoglycemia can be an issue with people who have had stomach surgery.

Anyone else have hypoglycemia issues due to Nissen surgery? How do you handle it?

Want to add that he never had episodes of hypoglycemia before the surgery. This started after the surgery.

I think most people call (hypoglycemia) Dumping Syndrome. I developed it 6 month after surgery, It can be very depressing at first but thing will settle down over time.

Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar levels. Dumping syndrome is when the stomach empties too rapidly into the small intestine.  I hope your condition has improved.

NFwifey..

I have been on here since April and have not seen any one that had this particular issue arise after the surgery.. I would definitely call the doc and have him go see what i going on..

Other than this issue, is hubby doing ok since his surgery?? please keep in touch I am sure others will be interested in knowing what this is all about..

Thanks Kyheart. DH is doing astonishingly well since his surgery. He's eating just about everything now, no more GERD, and no other issues except for the low blood sugar problem. When he has an episode, it really knocks him for a loop until he eats something or drinks a soda, then he feels much better. I'm assuming at this point that it's low blood sugar since his symptoms and how he treats it match that syndrome.

I noticed it happening a few times - he'd get dizzy and feel terrible, need to sit, and eat a little something - but that was early on and I just thought it was because he had just recently been through surgery. But he told me today that it keeps happening and its more frequent than he's been letting on. Luckily, when something's wrong, he has no problem going in and seeing the doctor.

He's making a doctor's appointment on Monday. I'll be sure to keep you all updated when we find out more.

Hi NF,

Dumping syndrome can be accompanied by hypoglycemia symptoms.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dumping-syndrome/DS00715/DSECTION=symptoms

Does he have any symptoms of dumping?  While I didn't get the hypoglycemia with the dumping episodes I had post-Nissen/during recovery, it is definitely a side effect symptom.

I'm glad your hubby is going to see a doctor about it.  Hopefully things straighten around for him soon.

Best wishes,

Denise

Thanks Dencha,

I've done some more google-fu and found out the same thing, that hypoglycemia is part of late dumping syndrome. I read the list of symptoms of late dumping syndrome to DH and he said those are the symptoms he is having.

Well, DH tried to make an appt. with his surgeon. Couldn't get past the woman who answers the phone and told him that she had never heard of such a thing, and he needed to make an appt. with his regular doctor.

He went to see his regular doc who sent him for blood work, gave him a diabetes testing machine and a Rx for the test strips.  Well, he wrote the Rx wrong, the pharmacy couldn't fill it, and the women who answer the phones at the doc's office were also less than helpful.  After a couple unsuccessful phone calls DH was researching other docs so he could switch docs, we were both fed up with the situation.

Finally, a couple days ago, the doctor called DH with his blood test results which were normal. DH told him about the Rx issue and the doc said to come by the office, he had another diabetes tester that had 10 test strips included and we would swap testers. Don't need very many test strips, he just wants DH to test himself when he has these attacks. I went to the doc's office yesterday and swapped testers and told DH he should do a trial run so he knows how to work the machine before he has an attack.

So that's all we know for now. Hopefully we'll figure this thing out. He's still having attacks, but he seems to be having less of them, but I haven't asked him lately how often he's having them either.

I told him he needed to cut down on caffeine and sugar because the research I did says those are likely triggers for these attacks. I also told him he needs to eat protein with carbs when he has an attack, candy/sodas is not so good. I told him to try and eat some crackers/cheese, pb/crackers, yogurt/toast, or something like that. He did good last night, he called me from the grocery store to ask me if we needed anything and I reminded him he needed to make sure he had something healthier on hand in case of attack because he's out of town this morning and he found some low sugar protein bars - only 3 grams of sugar per bar.

I went through this after my GB surgery. Protein is the best thing, the bars you mentioned are good but of course don't forget the carbs in them that turns to sugar, I used raw natural almonds for my snack. I think mine was related to very high cortisols/adrenals after a 5 month bout with GI issues and then the surgery and bile just set it over the edge. I am now on the other side of the Hypoglycemic episodes I think. Of course I went to a urgent care center and about got laughed out of there. He told me one would almost have to work in a lab to figure out if they were really hypoglycemic. I knew what was going on though as I had suffered with gestational diabetes when pregnant. You can feel the ups and downs when you aren't used to it.
