***Anyone is welcome to join this thread, but I am specifically asking Miss Lapponia because she has undergone my desired treatment in the country I'm living in.

Hi Miss Lapponia,

I looked at the website you suggested but honestly my Finnish isn't good enough for a specialized topic like that (I've only lived in Finland for a year now). I had some questions for you specifically if you wouldn't mind answering them:

-What were your symptoms?
-How long were you on PPI's (and did they work for you)?
-How long between your diagnosis and your surgery?
-What tests did you have to do?
-How long did you stay in the hospital?
-How long was your recovery time from surgery?
-Did you have a hernia?
-What did you have to pay (if anything)?
-Who was your surgeon?

I am a student on the public health care system so I know our situations are a little different, but in America I felt very confident dealing with doctors but here everything is different because I don't speak the language well (yet! still working on it turn ). I would love to hear how you went through it.

My main hope is that if the surgery is right for me, I wouldn't have to wait long to get something done. I am going back to America for a holiday next summer and would love for this to be cleared up or at least have an end in sight by then.

I would be really grateful to hear back from you.

Kiitos paljon!

Moi Ashley :-)

You opened a new thread for that. Alright, let's talk about it.

There are some points that we already discussed with Alleycat...about hernias and how it all went with me. Sorry, I wrote it quite quickly, but if there is some interesting things you want to know...just ask!

Symptoms - All started with surprise with a a low Hb 85. I had occasionally heartburn symptoms, but I never thought they were so serious. Always I found a good reason, why I had heartburn.

PPI's - I got Nexium after my first G-scopy. There was La C Esophagitis, which needed an extra G-scopy after one month. After that I got cheaper PPI's Gasterix ( active substance Lansoprazol 30 mg). I think both of them worked quite well...but there was seldom those heartburn symptoms.

From the dg to the surgery - The dg I got Spring-10 and then twice discussion with surgeon -> to a surgery-queue for 6 months -> the surgery was on March 10th 2011.

Tests - 2 x G-scopy

Hospital - I stayed in the (Meilahti) Hospital x 2 days after the surgery

Recovery - I had very peaceful and easy recovery time! The 1st week after the surgery was that real "recovery time". Then the 2nd post op week was more like "mental-recovery". I mean... to understand what has happened, how to eat & how often and so on...Then I lived very easy life for 3 months. (The liquid diet period was 3-4 weeks)

Hernia - Yes, after the G-scopy there was found hh, then during the surgery the dg changed to PEH, (10 cm in the thorax area).

€ - Clinicfee 27,40 € x 3 visits (2 x surgeon visits + pre op visit) & daily hospital charge 32,50 € x 3(op day + 2 extra days)

Surgeon - As I said before that was the first day in this hospital when they used "Leonardo/the robot" to gastrosurgeries. My surgeon was mr Jukka Sire'n (and the proctor was mr Marcus Andstedt, Sweden). your case, the most important thing right now is to find the right dg for you. That's why you are going to G-scopy. Try to relax, the exam will take only 5 min and then it is over. You are a lady with a strong temperament. This will be easy for you wink

If you have any other questions, just ask...

Sari, I'm sorry that I ever thanked you for your response. You're very kind to share all of this with me!

One more questions: You said you had an HB of 85. What is HB?

HB is haemoglobin - 85 g/L or 8.5 g/dl. Interesting, I would like to know more about the anaemia too as my haemoglobin has a gone down. Initially it looked like iron deficiency or maybe blood loss due to gastritis. However, it's now looking more like a side effect of Lansoprazole, which leaves me with Hobson's choice as far as treatment goes!

New stuff: GERD. Interstitial Cystitis
Lifelong stuff: Food allergies, eczema, asthma
