I am worried about having this procedure done because lately I've been experiencing extreme muscle weakness in my upper arms and throughout my chest. It gets so bad that It feels like paralysis and I cannot move my arm and when I can it is extremely weak and feels like acid is burning it on the inside. I went into the hospital a couple days ago because of extreme upper stomach pains and really bad tachacardia. My heart was topping out at 160-170 bpm. While I was there they just waited it out and had me lay flat on my back. It was "sinus tachacardia" so they weren't worried about it. The thing is I know that some diseases like Chrones can cause tachacardia but I've never heard of a stomach/colon issue causing muscle weakness/paralysis symptoms. I did tell my new gi dr this and he did tell me there could be some complications with the egd but thought it was more important to take a look inside to make sure there was nothing serious happening.

Also does anyone else have increased heart rate after eating just a small amount of food?It seems that lately after I eat even a small bowl of soup and nothing else my heart starts skipping and racing. I have been to a cardiologist and had an echo done but wont know the results for another 2 weeks or so. I've also been experiencing shortness of breath with any kind of exertion. I went up a flight of stairs today and my throat and upper stomach were burning and my heart was racing and I got really short of breath. Its almost like the burning is soo bad that it takes my breath away...??? That's what it feels like anyway...    Any advice???

NS, am sorry to read of your multiple problems but your case history sounds very complicated and I am not sure we can answer your questions re issues with your EGD.

You may want to get a second opinion from another GI Specialist.  I wish you the very best and do feel comfortable venting here in the forum as we are here to support you.

Kindly,
Kitt

Food allergy can cause an increase in heart rate when you consume the food you are allergic to, though I don't know how strong an effect that is on heart rate. When they do your scope ask them to test you for coeliac disease and to test for eosinophils and other signs of allergy. Make sure they test you for Helicobacter too.

They will monitor you very carefully whilst you have the scope but you should of course let them know about your recent tachycardia. Whilst not fun, it will also be interesting to see how your symptoms are during the fasting period.

Good luck with your tests.
