I have had heartburn for over five years (since I was 20) as well as an ache under my right rib which sometimes spreads to the center and the left side. My doctor says there is nothing wrong but lately the pain is constant right across the top of my ribs and has spread to my chest. There was one day where even moving my tongue hurt all the way down my throat to my belly but thankfully it only lasted a few hours. Anyway I was just wondering if this could be related to gerd as I have no idea what it could be and it worries the hell out of me even though my doctor seems unconcerned.

Thanks guys

It could be related to gerd. Here's a funny story of me and gerd:

I was on the city bus, my roommate the bus driver, waiting for her to get off work. I doubled over in pain, it felt like a pain would travel up my ribs/stomach area and to my chest where i felt it would explode. But since I was having chest pain, my roomie, pulled over her bus, called the medics. I stump the medics, and they wisk me to the hospital. The doctor thought I was just a drug seeker, and he didnt believe me, unfortunally until he was doing a neurological test of squeeze my hands. Another one hit me, I was trying to ttell him it comes and goes, but he didnt listen til I was to "squeeze" his hands in a neuro test. I kept squizing and more and more and he goes "your hurting me let go" I say "But itt hurrrrrtsssssss" he looked up saw my face was in sheer pain, that I turned ghostly, and then says "I think I figured out whats wrong hold on I'll go get a rememdy". Then he comes back with this drink "quick theres liquid nitrogen in it, drink fast before it eats the cup". I'm drinking. drinking drinking, and then he tells me "you had a severe acid reflux attack that can mimick heart attacks. its always better to get checked out to rule out the heart attack"

So yes it can be related to gerd, it can be also something to do with a pinched nerve, could be anything. I'd go back to the doctor ask for preventive medication for gerd. Theres tons of it like, purple pill, zantac, protoniz, prilosec are just a few examples.

A natural rememdy, which takes a month to start working is 2oz aloe vera juice daily. But I'm telling you, it tastes wretched, but really does work

Have you ever seen a GI Physician for your heartburn or had any test to rule out GERD ?  If you have had this for 5 years I am wondering if you have ever tried any OTC medications as many are available. Here is a link to one of the sites but each medication has it's own web site so check them out if you have not done so already.

You should get an appt. with a GI Dr. and have an endoscope done. It's a pretty easy procedure to go through and can tell you some useful things, such as if you have acid damage to your esophagus.

A GI Dr. can recommend meds and there's a lot of info. out there available on lifestyle changes as well.

Feel better!

I have tried over the counter medication and it relieves the burning but not the pain. I have also tried lanzoprazole and omeprazole which again only stop the burning sensations.

I will be seeing the doctor again in a week to get the results of an ultrasound taken today so I'm going to ask for a blood test to check for an ulcer because I was wracking my brains trying to remember when all this began and it was back when my wisdom teeth were coming through which were very painful. I must have went through a packet of ibuprofen a day for a good few weeks before getting them removed and I have read that they can cause stomach problems if used for a long time.

5 years seems too long for it be an ulcer though but what do i know.

If the blood test is negative then I will ask for the camera which I am trying to avoid lol

Thank you guys so much for your replies
