Has anyone found that changing the time of the day they take their meds helped with reflux?  Right now I take 40 mg nexium in the AM and 20 mg prilosec before dinner.  I was thinking about swapping them around because I take a higher dose of nexium than prilosec and thought maybe that would cover nighttime better.  I don't know when I reflux because I have LPR and have no symptoms besides hoarseness and lump in throat and constant throat clearing.  So I was just thinking that maybe if I am refluxing more at night, I should take the nexium right before bed to cover me through the night.  Is it ok to do that even though the package says to take on empty stomach and one hour before a meal?  I didn't know if taking it and not eating makes a difference.
Thanks!   shocked

I take 40 mg omeprazole in the morning and supposed to take it before bed. I've found that if I take it before bed it makes my symptoms much worse. I would think swapping them for a few days for a trial run wouldn't hurt anything. But I'd make sure you take the nexium on an empty stomach. For me, I have to eat a half hour after I take my meds, even if it's just a few crackers or it seems like it doesn't work.

Hey Gin,

I was told to take my Nexium once a day (no time specified) but since my symptoms typically flare up around afternoon/evening time, I take mine a half hour after breakfast and that seems to work best for me. I think it is incredibly important to wait the hour before eating again. I always take mine before class so I am sure to have a solid hour of no food! :)

Good luck!

I had a similar problem once on nexium...instead of taking it before bed I took it an hour before dinner. That seemed to split them up equally (usually 6am and 6pm, an hour before both breakfast and dinner), and worked well for me. Much better than morning and before bed.

Have you discussed with your doctor changing to two nexiums a day? I was on 2 a day before my surgery.

I go back to the dr this friday so maybe I can get more info from her about timing and the fact that I think the priliosec is not helping at all. In fact I have had some burning in throat that I didn't have before I added in the prilosec. She gave me samples of dexilant to try instead of nexium if I wanted to. Anyone had good outcome changing from nexium to dexilant? I have been on nexium for 10 years and its always worked until now.

My ppi had very little impact on my nausea until I started taking it at night. I take it about 2 hours before bed as I think it takes about 90 minutes to get going. But as Joy says, you could ask about a divided dose that would give even coverage round the clock.
