Hi everyone! I am fairly new to Healingwell and have initially posted under anxiety and depression. Last weekend though, my therapist suggested that my anxiety is due to my Acid Reflux. She sees me struggle with it during sessions. Feeling unwell everyday because of my the reflux, which I've had since 2007 (I'm currently 30), has caused me to develop anxiety during situations when I am alone because my symptoms include difficulty breathing and a feeling that my stomach is in a knot. I recently decided to ask for a 2 week leave from my boss because going to work has caused me to break down and he's ok with it. I feel like a kindergarten not wanting to go to school alone.

Now my 2 weeks is almost over, I need to decide if I will be going back to work or not. I know if I go back to work I have to stand by my decision: no calling in sick or leaving early frequently, I have to suck it up and stay there until its time to leave even though I feel unwell and very anxious. My therapist suggests I focus on having my reflux treated or managed. I love my job, but my anxiety about my reflux is overpowering me.

Has anyone left their jobs to help themselves get better? Any inspiring stories about getting your reflux managed? I am currently on 40mg protonix taken every morning, Carafate, Tums, and Maalox as needed. My endoscopy 2 years back revealed a hiatal hernia.

Hi Sarsi,

It seems to me that if GERD is creating that much anxiety and discomfort, your therapist is nudging you in the right direction.  First, I'd say that 40mg Protonix once a day is inadequate.  I have a reactive stomach and recently took antibiotics.  Since then my stomach has been very uncomfortable.  Fortunately, since I had the Nissen surgery, it's staying there.  However, during these flare-ups I revert to my pre-Nissen medication of 40mg Protonix before breakfast and before dinner, as well as 300mg Zantac at bedtime.

Once things settle down, I will go back to just 40mg Protonix at dinnertime.  (my doctors are being very careful because before my surgery my lungs were in horrible shape due to GERD, so they are acting on the fact that even after a Nissen a small amount of reflux may be present.

The reason I bring this up is that it seems like you may be under-medicated.  Please go back to a GI doc and explain the difficulties you're experiencing.  Stay away from the anxiety end and bring a list of specific physical discomforts your GERD is producing, and how it affects your daily life.

Hang in there.  Things will get better!
Denise

Thanks so much for the advice! I scheduled an appointment with my Doc but won't be seeing her until Dec. 1. I will try to send her a message asking what I can do for now. I am really hoping to get my GERD managed so I can move on with other issues in my life :)
