Hey, I usually post in the fibro forum but am here to ask about a problem that I've been having with heartburn.

I'm 21, eat well, don't smoke, but for some reason I have been experiencing acid reflux almost daily for the past few months. Most days it is very painful and makes me feel nauseous if left untreated and even something as seemingly harmless as a glass of water can trigger it. I take antacids twice a day and that seems to eliminate symptoms.

But I'm starting to become concerned because I'm noticing radical changes in my voice. My voice is very hoarse, deep, and I have trouble speaking for long amounts of time. Is it possible that the heartburn can be doing damage to my vocals?

I really don't know anything about this so any advice in terms of treatment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Tara,

I'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling well =(... Yes, it is possible that reflux may be hitting your vocal cords, but you could also be experiencing hoarseness from something else. The best way to tell is to see an ENT doctor (Ears, Nose, and Throat) and have your larynx examined.

Hope you feel better soon

Hi Tara,

Welcome to HealingWell.  I believe your symptoms call for a visit to the GI physician or your own PCP if you need a referral to a GI before you see a specialist.
"Acid reflux almost daily for the past few months" does fit the symptoms of GERD, however, I am not a Dr. and cannot dx.
Keep on talking with us.
