I have GERD and am on medication prescribed by a doctor. I am having problems swallowing. I feel heaviness in my chest and also have stabbing sharp pains in my shoulder blades. No matter what I eat or drink my symptoms do not seem to get much better. I have been drinking just water and eating turkey sandwiches and bananas/apples to help with my acid reflux. Do these symptoms seem common and how can I experience some relief? I have not had the testing done yet but plan to asap. My stools are also yellow. any advice or tips would be helpful. thank you.

JSLu

if there is one thing i have learned from "dr Google" its that almost any set of several symptoms can fit at least a gazillion diseases

color of excrement can be caused by many different things...many fruits and vegetables etc can have a decisive effect

pains in the back, chest etc lead to many a differential diagnosis....

i have gerd-lpr and i have experienced every symptom you mentioned...having said that, proves nothing,...tests are key

have you had a barium swallow (esophageal floroscopy)..this, and maybe other "imaging" would b helpful in figuring out whats going on

i can tell you that the symptoms most of us feel,... like you feel.... makes us worry a lot, you are not alone

go back to the doctor and gets tests

and meanwhile try this

eat small small meals...

avoid onions tomatoes, citrus, alcohol mint and chocolate and spices

sleep in a reclining chair so your torso is about inclined up 45 degrees

do these three things for one week and if your problem is reflux and if your situation is like mine then i bet you will begin to feel a little bit better

but please ask primary doc what tests cant narrow this down to a diagnosis

hang in there...many here, are like you (and me!) in their struggle...dont loose hope

Apples are irritating for some people, especially the peel, though they don't bother me. Melons are not acidic, and are asier on your stomach than apples. Read the label for everything you eat, stay as far away as you can from fats and acids, higher pH is less acid. Acidity or alkalinity of foods is based on actual pH value, not the acidified and alkalinized lists commonly found on the Internet. Here's a list of pH values of foods:
