I had to start on Zithromax 2 days back .. for something unrelated. However, I feel that my GERD is much better in the last 2 days. I was tested for H. Pylori back in March when my GERD symptoms began - which was negative.

I googled about this and I got to these 2

I got these references from Chris Kresser's website:

So, now I am wondering .. can this help fix or reduce my (and others) GERD?

I know some people get GERD due to excess use of antibiotics .. but I feel that I don't fall into that category .. I've may be used antibiotics 3-4 times in the last 10 years.

Funny you should mention antibiotics, as I was looking up the efficacy of erythromycin on GERD just a few hours ago. I read that this antibiotic promotes motility and strengthens the LES valve. Is zithromax the same as erythromycin?

Glad this is easing your symptoms

Good Morning Faith,

Zithromax is an macrolide antibiotic related to erythromycin. It fights bacteria in the body.

Zithromax is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

thanks for the Link...

It is interesting to note the IA Pressure theory...

sometimes when i eat a problem food i will get somewhat painful burps... like my LES is sore from gas pressure.

Hey Skitt,

Thank you for your helpful response. I'm wondering if they both speed up motility and strengthen the LES?

I am not quite sure how the antibiotics work and whether they can be prescribed to treat LES like that - since their primary role is for getting rid of the bacterial infections. Further, Zithromax is mostly prescribed for 5 days (5-day pack) - and so how can it "fix" the LES in 5 days? One should not really take antibiotics on a long term basis anyway!

As far as my symptoms on Zithromax go - on day 3, they are not as good as those in days 1 and 2. So, I don't think I am continuing to get better with respect to my GERD.

GERD is such a confusing ailment ... the only constant seems to be that it'll always be an up-and-down kind of a thing!

A 5 day antibiotic keeps working for 10 days. But I still don't understand how a LES could be "fixed" in that amount of time. My perception is that sometimes if the pressure from stomach acid or other sources is relieved, the LES can heal over time, but probably not in a few days.
