Please help. My doctor told me today that I have a hiatus hernia.  Can a hiatus hernia be detected without any scans, tests etc. by palpation of the area only ? blush

Palpation mght detect the air in the stomach. He's probably going on your reported symptoms too. Did you tell him you have chest pain after eating?

You can ask the doctor how he figured it out.

In any case, most people get a hiatal hernia sometime as they get older. It's not a problem unless it's causing intolerable symptoms. Most people never know they have it.

He is most likely going on your synptoms.
I told mine about taking cayenne pepper and bending over double, he correctly diagnosed me, sure he did a egd later and found the hernia.
Thousands of people live their whole lives with the problem, some take various meds to help cope. Only a small percentage ( me included) have to have something done.
