This is very strange, i had terrible GERD for almost 3 months and lost tremendously much weight to get down to the correct BMI and eating only small portions, diner fish and rice or egg every day, not drink to diner, drink 1 hour later, keep drinking plenty each day to flush system, excerise each day by power walking for 2 hours, rasing the bed by 15 degrees angle, eating by standing and not sitting.

But, 3 days ago i started drinking Proviva which is a natural drink in my country that you can buy at foodstore, it contains millions of good bacterias that the stomach have use for and it's natural , since i started drinking it i have been getting better and better, my gastritis is almost gone after 2 days, my extreme soar throat and acid coming up druing night is almost gone now.

I read in another thread one guy drank this and he got releived after 2 weeks and never got it back and he got terrible GERD for a long time as well......

The bacterias is doing something good, that's for sure, but i don't know what, anyway i have appointment with a GI specialist soon and will tell them about it.

Sounds interesting. How often did you drink this?

lanab-

That's great news. I am about to start taking pro biotics after I talk to a dietician Dec. 1st. I have been on such high doses of very strong anti biotics with my torn esophagus and nissen redo I am sure my system is out of wack. My surgeon thinks this also and is why he sent me to a dietician.

Take care,
Bill

I started 3days ago to drink it, one glas each day, at first i can feel the burning in my stomach a little bit after taken it but after awhile it settles down and it gets better for each hour.

This morning i wake up the first time without acid in my throat, it was dry and nice.

Yes i was also on antibiotics for 2 weeks the first month my GERD started as i had problems with my urinary tract, bacterias, i beleive the antibiotics did make the GERD worse.

My tongue was all white thick coated 3 weeks ago, it's almost gone now.

I hope i can ride this hell out now.

Hi Lanab
How interesting - my GERD (round 2 - round one was short lived in 2007) started straight after I had several courses of antibiotics for my cystitis. I haven't been very thorough in trying probiotics - I have had one in a capsule that I didn't take much of. A lot of the probiotic drinks contain milk (which I'm allergic to) - I wonder if there's anything like Proviva around in the UK.

Perhaps the initial discomfort is to do with the acidity of the fruit drink?

Let us know how it goes!

This link says it's in Sainsburys - I might give that a trial - thank you!

Lanab .. awesome news! Really happy for you!!

I've done a course of probiotics myself when I was diagnosed with GERD earlier this year. It helped .. but did not cure. I took liquid probiotics along with colostrum (as recommended by my naturopath). I guess it all depends on what the root cause is .. it seems like in your case the root cause was gut-bacteria related.

I will go back to adding probiotics to my diet again .. and see if it helps any further.

I am much better now but i had rebound of my gastritis yesterday after power walking for 1,5 hours.

I have no soar throat anymore but my gastritis came back a little bit after my walk yesterday, i don't know how that could affect it?

Hi Lanab,

How are you able to distinguish gastritis from reflux symptoms (I find it tricky!). Did you drink differently because of the exercise - lots of water with less food than usual? Do you know if you have a hernia - that may be aggravated by exercise??

Most people don't get better in a straight line, whatever illness they've had, a step backwards isn't unusual even if the general trend is still upwards!

MMM I have the same problem and so does my mother. She is currently taking acidopholus, which is a probiotic in tablet form, not in a dairy based drink. Could this be a possibility for you?

Hi Zeldagoblin,

I have tried one in capsule form, which was dairy free. However, I didn't notice any improvement. I am wondering whether the capsule form is actually designed to survive the stomach and release lower down directly into the intestine, and so has no effect of the ecology of the stomach itself.... So, perhaps Lanab's improvement on the probiotic drink is because the "good bugs" are delivered directly into the stomach - a possibility. I'll keep looking - there are dairy free probiotic drinks around, but the ones I've found so far are very pricey.

Thanks

I am doing fine now almost, the soar throat is getting lower and lower down my esophagus which should mean it's healing slowly now, also the gastritis is very minor now, i can feel some burning in hernia but it comes and go right now, it comes back when i have eaten or drank something.

My strict diet and weight loss must have made a important impact as well, yesterday i ate Spaghetti and Bolognese, i could handle it, i felt the acid in the throat and some small burning in hernia but it went away after 20 minuters after i ate.

I have not got the appointment yet with the GI, i hope i get there before christmas as i would like to know what it looks like inside.

It should be noted i have not taken any PPIs or H2s for 2 weeks now and i had horrible GERD since the end of October, all in all i have taken maybe meds for 2 weeks or something in total as i have not tolerated them, but it shows you can beat this without meds if you do it the right way and act fast.

Update to my situation for anyone interested, i have since Friday started with generic Omeprazole as my soar throat came back, despite my intolerance against these PPIs i don't seem to get any rash anymore, but i do get upset in the crane nerves and also get dizzy vision from time to time, it gets better when it's peaked during the day.

I will get off these PPIs tomorrow again after 5 days, i don't want to force it more than needed and needs to take it a step at a time, i beleive i can have a PPI free period for some time after this and i hope i don't get rebound again.

However my GERD was almost gone for two weeks as i wrote earlier but the soar throat came back, not as hard as before but irritating to be aware of it all the time so i started with Omeprazole.

The side-effects of these pills are not good, reading on other forums as well people have all kind of different problems.

Peace to all.

Hi Lanab,

Did you come off the ppis after this post in November?

I am trying Yakult but it is Lactobacillus casei, whereas Proviva is Lactobacillus plantarum. There seems to be some research saying the plantarum type probiotic can help with IBS. I wonder if the L.casei will have any of the same benefits . . .

My friend's OH is currently working in Denmark - I may ask if he can bring some Proviva back for me to try. Is it around in any supermarket?

Yes i am off PPIs now since 1 month back next week and i am handling it good, i would say my symtoms is so mild right now that it doesn't bother me too much, i am really glad i have sorted this hell at last.

You might be right, i do beleive i might have some milder form of IBS as well, not sure and i might have had bile reflux at the same time, however everything seems under control now and i strongly beleive the lliquid form of Probiotics i take has helped me alot, i started with one glas each day but ended up taking two glases each day and it made me even better.

Yes you can buy Proviva in any supermarket in the Nordics, if you tell your friend to goto one of the larger supermarkets in Denmark i am sure they will have it.

I read that Proviva tried to get in to the UK as well but it costed too much for the Swedish company so they had to withdraw from the market, it seems Danone, the French company, is the largest shareholder now.

I have a document from Sweden where several GI specialists did a test to see if Proviva helped treating different stomach diseases like IBS, i will try find it.
