My last scope showed my wrap was herniated, twisted, and broken down and it's only been a year since my last nissen. I was supposed to have an appt with my GI this past Tuesday but couldn't get off work so I had to reschedule. Next available opening is Feb 28th!! What a wait! Anyway I called to see if I could do the appt over the phone (he's 2 hours away) but the nurse said no because it's a consult for another nissen.

I seen a new surgeon (same location as my new GI) a month or 2 ago. He wanted me to do the 24 ph before he did surgery to make sure I have reflux. I couldn't tolerate the test. He said he wasn't going to do the surgery until I did it so I think my GI is over riding his decision.

According to my GI, he's going to do a complete take down and redo. I know this isn't the 'normal' nissen case but how can the wrap get that mangled in a year? And what does he mean by herniated, where did the wrap herniate to? I'm quite curious to see what the risks are after having it done 3 times. I'm sure I have a lot of adhesions again. I'm quite irritated I didn't get to go to my appt since I want to get this fixed asap but they put me on the cancellation list.

I was doing about as good as I can for the last few weeks, even gained 10 lbs back! And now I'm back to acid puddling in my throat, not being able to sleep, drinking very minimal (doesn't help my pots), barely eating. It's like a cycle, I'll get my weight back up to 117 and then I'll get bad again. I'm frustrated and just want this to be a closed chapter in my life.

Hi Michelle,
I'm glad to hear that you've found a different doc to do your surgery.  I believe that "the wrap has herniated" means that the hernia repair (which is what holds the wrap in place) has broken down, allowing the wrap to migrate, thus stopping it from working properly.  I was told that a failed hernia repair is the main reason for a failed wrap.

How has it happened?  Your guess is as good as mine.  My guess would be that it wasn't done properly in the first place, but who knows?  Did you have a vomiting illness during the recovery?  That would be an event that could destroy a wrap.

At any rate, whatever caused it, the main thing is that you're going to get it fixed, and hopefully very soon!  I'm sure it's hard to live with those nasty symptoms again!

You know you've got lots of friends here on the forum, ready to cheer you on! yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Very best wishes!

I did have a small hernia repair during my last nissen. I think it's funny (just a tiny bit funny) because the surgeon that did my first 3 nissens was SO confident and was actually mad that the first one failed because he didn't have any that failed. Go figure I was his first fail and 3 times. Lol Anyway, the only vomiting I had was when I took hydrocodone on an empty stomach after I had my tonsils out last July. But that was more of a spit up type thing than actual vomiting. I'm sure it still could have caused damage. My old GI said getting them removed would probably help, wasn't sure how but I was desperate for relief.

I love all of the support here!! It's so hard when my family doesn't believe my symptoms and tells me to just eat and take a tums. They don't understand how severe and painful it can get. I love my understanding cyber friends! :)
